LA County may close courts for several days to cut deficit

LOS ANGELES (AP) - County courts could be shut down for up to eight days over the next three months to help slash an $8.2-million budget deficit, officials said.

The move would send many workers home without pay.

"This is not something that we want to do," said presiding Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Robert A. Dukes said Thursday.

I wonder if "the right to a speedy trial" is impacted. Santa Clara County (much of Silicon Valley is in SCC) has a convoluted way of deciding that, based on the average number of days between arraignment and trial, something like that.
