Just like TIA and TIPS ... whoops, those got nuked. What is done can also be undone - and, with sunset provisions, it won't take an override of a presidential veto to eventually get rid of these provisons - hence the need to not allow this action of making the Patriot Act permanent to happen.

Trust me it can be stopped and will be stopped!

Debate goes beyond lone-suspect issue

Judiciary Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) has circulated one amendment that would eliminate the sunset provision in the anti-terror Patriot Act that passed in the aftermath of Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and greatly expanded the government's law enforcement powers.

Hatch wants to eliminate the law's Dec. 31, 2005, expiration date, a move that some civil liberties groups contend would embolden the Justice Department in its use of the sweeping anti-terror law.

Right! When the myriad police agencies get expanded powers they never let go. They always describe these powers as "tools" and complain that they just can't do their jobs without the extra power. Do you feel safer now? I doubt it. No matter how many "tools" they get they are still bureaucracies and as such are inherently inefficient. The best and brightest don't rise to the top in these agencies only the clever and ruthless.
