THERE is an element of the anti-war movement who live in hope that there is a huge disaster just around the corner.
They will not rest in warning of its arrival. They will not be satisfied until it has happened.
These are the people who have found it difficult to acknowledge that the war has achieved one mighty goal already removal of Saddam Hussein's dictatorship.
This is a terrific outcome. At least Greens Leader Bob Brown had the honesty to acknowledge it unconditionally.
"The end of Saddam Hussein's ruthless tyranny is a great day for Iraqis and the world," he said.
But he persisted with his original stance: "The Greens' opposition to this illegal war remains unchanged."
Some won't even go that far. The most common responses among extremists have been to ignore Saddam's removal or to argue that the end does not justify the means.
All these responses involve quickly moving on in hope of a fresh, counter-balancing calamity. It has to be accepted that these people will never endorse anything the US, Britain and Australia have done or will do in Iraq.
If troops leave quickly they will be abandoning Iraq to chaos. Stay on and they will be occupying a nation for its oil.
Facilitating Western standards of business and law will be trampling a defeated people's culture. And, of course, freeing a Muslim nation from a dictator meant they were at war with Islam.
We will no doubt hear more from these insatiable protesters but with every word we should remember that to them facts are irrelevant, logic a nonsense and nothing is as important as their pig-ignorant prejudices.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) In the war against terrorism, the Bush administration has failed to balance the scales of liberty and security, former U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno told a packed audience Monday night at Brown University.
After watching President Bush's address, Reno said,
''I had hoped people would come up with an opportunity for him to save face,''
