A year after Israel witnessed one of the worst suicide bomb attacks in its history at the Park Hotel in Netanya on Seder night last year, the Shin Bet announced that over one hundred members of the Hamas military infrastructure from Nablus, Tulkarm and Kalkilya who were involved in the planning of the attack have since either been caught or killed by security forces.
A day after the attack on March 27, in which 29 Israelis were killed and over sixty wounded, Israel launched Operation Defensive Shield in the West Bank in an attempt to destroy the terrorist infrastructure and capture the terrorists.
Abas al Said and Mohand Taher, senior commanders of the Hamas military infrastructure in the Tulkarm and Nablus areas, were behind the planning and organization of the attack.
Abas al Said was arrested by the Shin Bet six weeks after the attack and admitted to investigators that he had planned to perpetrate the attack many months earlier but was forced to postpone it.
Said admitted that his original plan was for a double suicide bomb attack and that the two bombers he had recruited for the mission had agreed in July 2001 to carry it out but he opted to freeze the plan for a later date.
Said ordered Muamar Shahoori to obtain two explosive belts from the Hamas infrastructure in Nablus and he requested from Fathi Hatsiv to drive the suicide bomber into Israel and to locate a suitable site for the attack.
All four members of the Hamas cell responsible for the Park Hotel attack were sentenced Monday in the Salem military court to 29 life sentences and twenty years each for every life they took.
Said supervised the preparations of the suicide bomber Abed Al Basar Oudeh, who shaved his beard, applied make up and dressed in blue women's jeans and a brown shirt, women's shoes, wore a wig and a brown overcoat.
Said fitted the explosives belt on Oudeh, a khaki colored waistcoat fitted with pockets containing ten kilograms of explosives and taught him how to activate it. He then filmed Oudeh who brandishing an M-16 and a Hamas headband, declaring himself a martyr and claiming responsibility for the attack.
Taher, a resident of Nablus, was killed by security forces in June 2002. He was responsible for supplying the explosives belt which he obtained in Nablus and transferred to the Hamas infrastructure in Tulkarm.
Muamar Shahoori, of Tulkarm, who was arrested a month after the attack by security forces, recruited Oudeh for the attack and was involved in its planning. He admitted to investigators that he received instructions and money from Said and was told to tighten his connections with the Hamas infrastructure in Nablus in order to facilitate the transfer of the explosive belts to Tulkarm. He was also present when Oudeh was filmed before setting out to perpetrate the attack.
Ali Hadiri, who was killed in May last year, was responsible for transferring the belt of explosives used in the attack from Nablus to members in Tulkarm. Fathi Hatsiv who drove Oudeh to the site of the attack in Israel was also arrested last May and told investigators that he purchased a car in Israel and drove Oudeh to Nizlat Issa near Tulkarm and from there changed cars and drove him to Netanya.
Nidal Kalak, who was to have been the second suicide bomber in accordance with Said's original plans, was arrested in April last year. Others arrested in the Tulkarm area who were involved in the planning of the attack included Ahmed Jaisi who checked that the belt of explosives was ready for use and Natser Yitaimeh who hid the belt until it was used.
Just throw them out on the streets on Jerusalem, so the crowd can give them some real justice.
