Robbins and his ilk misconstrue it because they are elitists who want to turn this country into a totalitarian regime like Iraq used to be. In such a regime, only the elites would have the right to free speech, while the unwashed masses would be silenced. Robbins and his self-annointed colleagues truly believe that only they have the right to speak out, and they are enraged when the peons not only dare to speak out as well, but actually disagree with them. They want to speak out with impunity, even when they spew pure hatred and lies, and they wish those who counter them with the truth could be jailed.
