I get it now. You have to read carefully and between the lines. The point of the story is that they consider stabbing an LA Times reporter in the butt a bad thing.

I think the Iraqi's were merely expressing their editorial judgement about the Los Angeles Times.

He's claiming these Iraqis were attacking him purely for being American.

Or maybe because he was an LA Times reporter. There was a woman reporter for the Times who was an activist journalist, she was willing to fabricate an event to have something to cover.

In Miami during the Elian situation she was busted for throwing rocks at the cops during a street protest (trying to cause a riot so she could cover the cops and antiCuban protestors fighting). She later was involved in that Church of the Nativity seige.
