Iowa State University researchers are checking to see whether birds are dying in collisions with the wind turbines that are popping up in the Iowa countryside like prairie grass. Bats and birds, even golden eagles, have died after colliding with wind turbines across the West and Midwest.

I used to get a good belly laugh out of watching the lefties circular logic cause them to run headfirst into one another. A virtual lefty figure eight race if you will.

No nukes, Go wind....ooops, you might kill a bird.
No coal, Go hydro....ooops, you created a lake where one wasn't intended...ooops, Don't touch that lake it's a protected wetland....ooops the fish get caught in the turbines...
No gas, go bio-mass...ooops, creates greenhouse gasses.

Any more all I get is a chuckle as I grab for my wallet. I've become more and more convinced it's not about protecting anything except their incomes. $243,000 to study something that should be obvious...Yup, your gonna kill an occasional bird.

I have seen incidents where some birds fly into glass windows in buildings resulting in death to the birds. How about tearing down all buildings and removing all inhabitants to caves and dugouts?

Those turbines are plug-ugly, and they take quite a bit of land. I'd rather see an oil rig any day (esp. the ones painted to look like giant grasshoppers).
I hope they do decide that turbines are Cuisinarts for birds.

The older, open tower designs were bad for hawks, eagles and the like. They would sit on the girders and get wacked by the blades when they took off flying. The enclosed towers don't have this problem. Also I think that recent designs have larger slower turning blades.

Thanks for the windpower post! It sure would be nice for the people concerned about bird kills to compare windturbine bird vehicular birdocide. How many millions of birds get splattered against cars and trucks each year, not to mention the 41,500 people that die in them each year.

Current windmill installation world wide is standing at 31 GW BTW and growing about 20 percent per year.
