If you want to really scare your audience, you might consider a plot line wherein the mad dictator laces stashes of U.S. ca$h with a bioweapon like anthrax, polio, or smallpox, and then leaves all the cash where she knows GI's will recover it, keep it, send it home, spend it, and contaminate large areas.
It would certainly beat most of the fiction that comes out of the NY Times every day...

Added to that is the development of significant technological advances by the Chinese on the back of our own technology transfer throughout the 1990's. When the Chinese and Islamics form an unholy, secret alliance, Iran and its Mid East allies open up a major war in the Mid East. As we get fully engaged there, N. Korea invades S. Korea. When we respond strongly to that, China, while playing the part of the intemediary, ambushes the 7th Fleet and launches a massive conventional missile attack against the continental U.S. while hundreds of terrorsits attack throughout America at once.
It takes us several years of hard fighting and austere and dangerous circumstances before we can recover and be in a position to regain the initiative.
Towards the end, in Volume V (not published yet) when the Chinese get very desparate, I have a scenario that they will unleash that is a kind of cloak and dagger, underhanded way of trying to exact severe retribution on us and forestall there own demise. It will be dicey, but is not this particular set of events.

Have sanctions against Iraq murdered millions?

Are "a million innocent children...dying at this time...in Iraq" because of U.S. sanctions, as Osama bin Laden claimed in his October 7 videotaped message to the world? Has the United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) discovered that "at least 200 children are dying every day...as a direct result of sanctions," as advocacy journalist John Pilger maintains on his Web site? Is it official U.N. belief that 5,000 Iraqi children under the age of 5 are dying each month due to its own policy, as writers of letters to virtually every U.S. newspaper have stated repeatedly during the past three years?
The short answer to all of these questions is no.
