Atlanta, Friday, April 18) -- House Judiciary Chairman Tom Bordeaux (D-Savannah) called an irregular "short-notice" meeting yesterday of a "special" subcommittee to advance the SB1 Stealth Triggerlock bill.
The full Judiciary Committee will take up SB1 on Mon. Apr. 21 and it's expected to be approved. SB1 will then go to the House Rules Committee where it will likely be scheduled for floor action Thu. Apr. 24, the last day of the session.
But CSG lobbyists warned that could change. "The creation of a special subcommittee to advance SB1 on short notice is a signal House bosses are ready to use irregular tactics," said CSG Legislative Director Bill Phillips. "That means the Rules Committee could suddenly schedule SB1 for immediate floor action Tuesday," he said.
If you're one of the many people who've contacted their representatives in support of House Pro-Gun Leader Rep. Bobby Franklin's Self-Defense amendment to SB1, you get a big "thumbs up." Your work has paid off with the Reps. who've been getting messages.
But a number of Reps. still haven't been contacted by anybody yet, and that could mean that Georgia will soon end up with effectively the worst triggerlock law of any state except for Massachusetts. (note - they didn't include Wash DC)
If you haven't contacted your state representative(s) urging them to support the Self-Defense amendment to SB1, it's vital you do so as soon as possible!
"Checking with members of the House yesterday, we found many of those who've been contacted said they'd support the Self-Defense amendment," said CSG lobbyist Ronnie Farr. "The problem is with the ones who haven't been contacted yet. Outside the metro area, contact has been patchy. Gun owners urgently need people from rural areas or smaller towns to contact their state representatives, especially Reps. elected as Democrats from pro-gun areas."
If you know somebody who lives in a small town or rural area in Georgia, or in the suburban area of a city other than metro Atlanta, please get in touch and ask them to contact their state Rep. immediately in support of the Self-Defense amendment to SB1.
The Self-Defense amendment to SB1 will stop officials from coming in your home or vehicle and arresting you for keeping your gun unlocked so it's ready for self-defense. This is especially important to people from pro-gun areas in small town or rural Georgia who end up having to drive through places like parts of metro Atlanta or other cities where many local officials and judges are anti-gun.
