WASHINGTON - The Bush administration is debating whether it is worth holding further nuclear talks with North Korea, following Pyongyang's vague threats to a U.S. envoy this week that it might test or even export nuclear weapons, senior U.S. officials said Friday.

Cheney says it is futile? N Kor should be very worried. But, does Alfred E. Newman worry?

Actually *I* am worried. Cheney and Rumsfeld are never wrong.

As for ... "China has blocked the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council from formally discussing the issue, diplomats said.

"The Chinese would have to change. I don't see that happening," said a U.S. diplomat."

... we need to be talking sense into China. maybe a 100% tariff on all CHinese goods to the US would wake them up.

Re #3

There is a good chance that the redeployment of U.S. forces in S. Korea would be sped up. If America is considering a tough action against N. Korea, the first they do would be the redeployment of American troops to the south of Han River, probably in Pyong-Taek/Osan area.

The sped-up schedule could also mean that they may not have the time to construct new base facilities first. Many of these troops may have to live in make-shift facilities for extended peeriod of time.

I think that the Yongsan Garrison is the first to go.

"China has blocked the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council from formally discussing the issue, diplomats said."

Here we go again...... and North Korea wants bilateral talks and for the US to promise to be good boys AND to give them aid, then they'll be good...... except, like in 1994, thet'll immediately break their agreement and keep making some bombs here and there..... and expand their arms export business (the only business they have).
Now..... China, the ONLY country over there that can do anything about it (short of military action) won't even let it be talked about in the UN security council. They must have learned something from the French. *sigh*
So...... If China won't go along with an all-country economic boycott on North Korea (along with South Korea, Japan, the US, and Russia), then WE are left with precious few options. Errrrr...... only one option. Take out all the North Korean Military capability, nukes AND conventional arms - so there's no threat to South Korea AND no further trade with Yemen..... and Egypt (who's purpose is to become the new military power in the region now that Saddam has bit the dust). And to think WE give egypt $2 billion in aid. *sigh*

Do the right thing quickly China...... or we're coming with more than just the MOABs. Maybe China can make MANY trips to North Korea and infect the entire country with SARS???? OK.... a bit of sarcasm.

What a shame.

China wants to never be a vassal state again, who can blame them. Treat them as partners and point out that N Kor is impeding their progress. They know this, but show how the situation can be rectified to the satisfaction of all including N Kor.

Alternatively, the first sign will be the sound of vehicle motors and generators all over N Kor. If the fireworks can be avoided, that would be the most impressive accomplishment possibly of all time. Resorting to war would be the ordinary solution. Elegant solutions are preferred, but not always possible.

Agree.

Either move our forces quickly to the South (doing it quickly just might scare a few countires into being proactive in helping to solve this thing)..... OR...... get them off the Island NOW.

B-52's and other black birds will be much more effective "talkers".

two points....a) this is media driven hence the reference
"sr. U.S. officials involved....(adding) "on terms of
anomymity"......

and b) remember all the dems said " but we need to do N.Korea first, not Iraq" soooo, reckon they really wanted to do N Korea ? seems like free political capital to find out

The Iraq solution is a one time event. It won't be repeated, not exactly like that. If there is a military move on N Kor, China would be involved, and with the allies rather than that primitive show last century. Can't imagine China standing by and losing a voice in the resolution of the problem since it is a boundary country. China must be on board before anything so dangerous is attempted.

How quickly do you think we can take out the 11,000 artillary pieces pointed at Souel (sp?)?

We can drop a whole mess of those electricity cutting munitions alll over the North, then cluster bomb every friggin military/nuke/arms prodduction plant there. No 500 pound bombs..... no worry about collateral damage. The only North Koreans there are the Military folk anyway. The "civilians are crawling to and from the Chinese boarder.

RE #12

I think that Rummy and Dick would rather have an elegant solution of N. Korean coup against Kim Jong-Il with Chinese help. That is a tough action I am thinking about. However, even this coup may not go smoothly as planned. There could be some fireworks even if the coup eventually succeeds.

See my post at #9
The article said
""China has blocked the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council from formally discussing the issue, diplomats said."

I don't think China wants to do a friggin thing. Once w move our troops south or out, then China will see we're serious and will do something significant with North Korea, their spoiled little brother. China doesn't want too be hostile with us.

1. I hope our hardliners are proposing doing a lot more than asking for UN sanctions! Good God!

2. Note this article deleted the fact that NK threatened to USE the nuclear weapons against us!!
