ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- An advertisement airing statewide urges Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich to veto a bill to study ways of making it easier for undocumented workers to obtain driver's licenses.

A father who lost his son in the Sept. 11 attack on the World Trade Center recorded the radio spot for a group called 9/11 Families for a Secure America. It was paid for by the Federation for American Immigration Reform, a Washington-based group.

"He was 23 when terrorists struck the World Trade Center," Peter Gadiel of Connecticut says in the ad. "I can't bring Jamie back. But I can help prevent terrorists from striking again. Maryland lawmakers have sent a bill to Governor Ehrlich that lets illegal aliens acquire Maryland driver's licenses."

Gadiel says that if signed, the legislation "would be a priceless tool for terrorists" because they could get a license without a background, criminal or immigration check.

"Don't let Maryland's license to drive become a license to kill," the . . .

"Don't let Maryland's license to drive become a license to kill," the ad concludes.

Is there an even greater potential for danger and fraud here? What's to prevent American citizens, who are wanted fugitives, from using forged documents and signing affidavits saying they don't have SS#'s. Could they not easily claim they are illegal alliens and get a new name and ID? Could be another motor-voter nightmare.

These ads need to be aired in every state, especially AZ and CA. The politicians there are trying to push these lunacies on the American people. By pandering to illegals, America is begging to be attacked by terrorists. While terrorists are plotting America's demise, they will be enjoying all the social services America has to offer: driver licenses, voting, in-state tuition, and welfare.

Nuts. Why would any United States citizen want this?

So you're FOR illegals getting driving licenses, and thereby getting registered to vote?

I've got an idea. Why don't we just make it so that illegal aliens don't have to have driver's licenses, only US citizens will need to have them. How much easier than that can you get. Or we could just make them all US citizens and make all US citizens into undocumented workers and then really crack down on THEM.

Why would anyone want these criminals to have drivers licenses? They should not even be in this country.

The Federation for Immigration Reform paid for the ads. They're very effective too. FAIR and NumbersUSA used them in 2000 to help get Mr. H1-B Spencer Abraham thrown out of office in Michigan.

People who believe in the rule of law. This law ignores that these people are here illegally. It doesn't change their illegality, it only condones it.

Maybe I misunderstood your question. If you mean to say who would pay for an ad in support of giving drivers licenses to illegals, I'd say probably someone who wants to anger and upset as many people as possible.

After 9/11, I can't believe politicians are even considering the idea.

Federation for Immigration Reform did. They run ads nationwide all the time exposing politicians coming up with loony ideas like this one.

oops! now I am embarrassed... I should have asked who sponsored the bill to allow illegal aliens to get drivers licenses.

I read the article wrong, and thought there was an ad on the radio in support of such a stupid bill. This is as bad as Gov. Pataki talking about education assistance for 'undocumented' people.

Joseph Vallario, a democrat introduced the bill. It has the support of some Republicans but it's mostly democrats pushing for it.
