The problem is not that the State Dept. is intentionally lying, which they aren't. They believe that Abu Mazen has good intentions, which he does not. He will be unable or unwilling to stop the terrorism of Hamas and other Palestinian terrorist groups, and if he tries to stop them he will be assassinated, just like Sadat. The problem is the naivete of the State Dept. who take Arab people at face value by what they say, not by what they do.

The problem will come if the US pressures Israel to make concessions based upon its trust in Abu Mazen. That could prove to be disastrous to Israel.
