DiFi is trying hard to resist the temptation to fiddle with the bill. A "strengthened" bill might give Bush an excuse to back down and oppose the bill rather than support it. After the firestorm that erupted after the White House's remarks about renewing the bill, they may be looking for an out. Let's hope that DiFi, or some other Democrat, succumbs to the pressured from these groups and tampers with the bill.

Feinswine is running scared that the companion bill in the House will become part of a broader bill that will never be passed. She may be right, but if we know one thing about politicians whatever their stripe, they are all "on the take" and their treachery knows no bounds. We need to "grease the right palms" in the House, but even that is no guarantee that they will do the right thing.

All ready been done in a House version of the "renewal". H. R. 2038 This was introducted on May 8, and after a quick look, it appears some "named" guns have been added and the "test" for an AW has been expanded to require only one "evil feature", rather than two. Plus definition of "pistol grip" changed to include a thumbhole stock. Also the following would now be "assault weapons" under the bill:

`(J) A frame or receiver that is identical to, or based substantially on the frame or receiver of, a firearm described in any of subparagraphs (A) through (I) or (L).
`(K) A conversion kit.
`(L) A semiautomatic rifle or shotgun originally designed for military or law enforcement use, or a firearm based on the design of such a firearm, that is not particularly suitable for sporting purposes, as determined by the Attorney General. In making the determination, there shall be a rebuttable presumption that a firearm procured for use by the United States military or any Federal law enforcement agency is not particularly suitable for sporting purposes, and a firearm shall not be determined to be particularly suitable for sporting purposes solely because the firearm is suitable for use in a sporting event.'.
