WASHINGTON (AP) - U.S. Treasurer Rosario Marin, the highest-ranking Latin American woman in the Bush administration, plans to leave her post at the end of June, the Treasury Department announced Thursday.

Marin, who became the 41st treasurer in the summer of 2001, is being floated as a possible Republican contender for a Senate seat from California in 2004.

Rosario Marin, the next Senator from California. Born in Mexico , she's a shoe-in.

I wonder how soon it will be before we all hear from the communist left that she isn't "Hispanic enough".

I know some people don't feel she's conservative enough, and I haven't heard enough about her positions to judge for myself, but I think that in California we have to take what we can get. I believe Rosario Marin can beat Barbara Boxer, and with Dennis Praguer out of the race I don't think there's any other California Republican who could.

This will also help Bush's efforts to carry California in 2004.

Too late, already started. She worked for "anti-Hispanic" Gov. Pete Wilson, remember? She's clearly a race traitor. {gag}

Marin is apparently not pro-life, but hopefully she opposes some abortion and supports things like parental consent. I don't see her as someone out on the Olympia Snowe Frenchie Fringe; she can be expected to support things like tax cuts, but probably not extensive spending cuts, though I'd bet she would go along with with consolidating/streamlining programs to reduce cost. She's a billion times better than Boxer, and she can get elected, and that's the key here. She's got the Bush aura, which means $$$$, so she will be able to run an active statewide campaign. It'll still be tough to take out Boxer, and running statewide is a new and different experience, but if pro-lifers swallow hard and think about how much better she'd be than Boxer, the Cali GOP could be united for once.

"Rosario Marin, the next Senator from California. Born in Mexico , she's a shoe-in."

I'm a little skeptical with that assessment. While it may sound overly traditional, I think it's going to take a candidate with brass nerve to defeat Boxer, the aptly named liberal. It may sound strange, but I think that a very strong white male candidate would have a better chance to defeat Boxer. The Democrats already have a non-traditional candidate in the race: a Jewish woman. Trying to match this could have similar results to the New Mexico GOP gubernatorial disaster in 2002. Don't forget that a minority candidate Matt Fong ran against Boxer in 1998, but failed to galvanise even the Asian vote.

Consider that white males won the vast majority of NB Senate & gubernatorial races throughout the nation in 2002 (even though they were sometimes pitted against women or minorities): TX, GA, MO, NY, MA, RI, etc.

I remember hearing it rumoured that Michael Reagan might run. Has anybody heard anymore on that?

My gut feel on Michael Reagan - hHe enjoys doing what he is doing. Life as a senator is not all its cracked up to be.

Babs is vulnerable, no matter how much you spin the lack of candidates or ethnicity of same.

We'll see soon enough. It looks like the campaign season for 2004 and for California, specifically, will kick in very shortly.

Very smart if Rosario Marin runs. Boxer has consistently filabustered Judge Estrada and can't use the gender card. Hope the GOP makes lemonade out of their lemons.

Oh, absolutely! Look at Saxby Chambliss, John Sununu, Jim Talent -- total RINOs!!!! And now they're wrecking things in 2004, with Richard Burr in North Carolina -- he's only, what, 99% conservative??? OH, THE SHAME OF IT!

Dope.

As long as she's not a Riordan, she's better than Boxer.

As treasurer, Marin oversees the makers of America's greenbacks and its coins - the Bureau of Engraving and Printing and the U.S. Mint, respectively.

Sounds like she's played a major role in converting the dollar to the Look, Feel and Value of the Mexican peso.

That loathsome token appointee seems to spend a lot of time in the dump south of the border working to speed up Mexico's strip-mining of the U.S. Check out this article... it tells of her days as mayor of illegal alien infested, buzzard flag-flying Huntington Park. That rathole is as bad as South Gate (see South Gate: Mexico Comes to California by Roger McGrath). This woman even causes the Democommies running bankrupting California to jump for joy.

Don't forget Rep. John Linder (GA-7) and Sen. John Sununu are stinking RINOS as well. Conservatives ought to let Marxists like Maxine Walters and John Conyers run the "show" in Washington.
