Yup "Crime Story" has runs on cable. Was on a year ago. It has a lot of continuity so if you can see it from the beginning it helps. Richard Farina's first shot at the big time plus some other guys who are great character actors.

I can't say enough about "Last of Mohicans".

around the time Last of the Mohicans came out I learned that Mann was NOT trained as a film maker, but instead was a painter (of canvas, not houses). If you look at that movie you can clearly see this in the way he constructed shots (I think of the carriage going over the bridge, for example).

stunning movie. I see it as a companion to Mel Gibson's The Patriot (I know, he just starred in it). Mohicans could easily be the story of Gibson's earlier battles, and the structure and look are very similar.

I also love that movie. Government bad guys versus criminal bad guys. It took me a few times watching that movie to realize that who I thought was the only "good guy" ( the retiring Treasury Agent ) killed near the start of the film in Lancaster was also up to no good. I thought he was trying to get one last good bust under his belt before he retired, but he was just trying to rip off the counterfeiters.

TV movie came first, then Heat, then the bank shoot out.
B&B did go bankrupt. The anti gunners held a rally there when they were trying to pass some BS bill (don't remember which one). I walked into the store the day after they closed and they had 2 beautiful Spanish FR8s on the wall, I'd have bought them if I'd been there the day earlier. All the gun stores are finding it very hard to do biz in LA as there are restrictions on ammo sales and other things that drive biz 10 miles across the border to Culver City or Burbank where they don't have the BS. Another big gun store in the SFV ( I think it was Pony Express) also closed up when B&B did.

I'm suprised they didn't have a picture of Ronald Reagan hanging on the wall, another liberal filmaker sight-gag cliche.

I remember seeing that in Boogie Nights, how RR represented the repressive '80s, and then of course, the lemming-like reviewer at Entertainment Weekly commenting on the RR picture like it was some great cinematic technique.

The thing was, there was no shortage of porno in the '80s. I saw plenty in my teens.

I am pretty sure they were pulled over on an on-ramp by Glendale PD. The officer had a hunch and called a load of backup, otherwise he might have been toast. They had loaded guns in the car with them. Since they weren't prosecuted, the judge ordered their weapons released, to help them "pay their legal fees."

I bought some guns from the B&B store in North Hollywood....it was a huge money-maker after the LA Riots....waits of half an hour to 45 minutes to be helped, etc. They had a policy that LAPD and LAFD personnel could purchase weapons and ammunition without waiting, during lunch hour for example....they were very popular for that. I don't believe that law enforcement personnel were subject to the 15-day waiting period at that time...but I could be wrong.

It is interesting to note that after the shootout, LAPD installed a policy of having one trained officer carrying a AR-15 in their trunk per division (precinct), in case this happened again. Of course, LAPD didnt go to Colt and buy these weapons new, they received surplus M-16s from the CA Nat'l Guard and converted them. Then the officers had to be qualified, etc. Other departments in the area have more liberal policies, and the CHP frequently have shotguns AND AR15s mounted in their cars.

B&B was effectively shut down by the LA City Council in later years, as they have a unstated policy of shutting down every gun store in the city. I believe there are only 6 left. This included registration for ammo sales, and now $5000 business license fees. The gun stores in Ventura County, and now in Burbank (3) are flourishing.
