LOS ANGELES (AP) - Garry South, longtime chief political adviser to Democratic Gov. Gray Davis, is signing on with Sen. Joe Lieberman, D-Conn., as a senior adviser to his presidential campaign.

South, whose aggressive tactics are credited with engineering Davis' hard-fought re-election victory in November, will remain in Los Angeles and focus his efforts on Lieberman's California campaign operation, said Lieberman spokesman Jano Cabrera.

This is more important than it seems, for two reasons.

First, Lieberman and Edwards are in a battle to decide who is the moderate alternative to Kerry, and this shows that Lieberman may have a shot at winning it. Edwards has failed to woo important political consultants, or, worst, been shortly left by those whom he's previously wooed. The gatekeepers of the key party donor constituencies and unions watch the political consultant derby very carefully.

Second is the California / New York / Illinois / Michigan factor. A skilled minorities-plus-soccer-moms campaign manager like South will help Lieberman by a lot there. He can win all the conservative and moderate small states he want, and he won't get the nomination if Kerry totally swamps him in big Yankee states. Finishing a respectable second, though, with the D's delegate proportional representation, can let him sneak through to a majority with big wins elsewhere.

So does this mean he doesn't see much more employment under the soon-to-be-recalled Greyout Davis administration ? ;-)

It's hard to say. Supposedly he was moving on after Davi$ got re-elected last year, but I guess no one else wanted him 'til now.
