[history]
The U.S. military is still getting action in Iraq and Afghanistan, but front-page news is no longer about them; it's about us.
From Martha Stewart to Sammy Sosa to Jayson Blair to Bill Clinton, quicker than you can say WMD, conversations have turned from who killed Laci Peterson to whether we can believe what anyone says anymore.

The evidence seems to support Sosa's claim that the slip-up was an accident. I wonder what "evidence" Patterson is referring to.

Yeah. As a Sosa fan myself, I'd like to think it was an accident. Either way, he has to pay the price. You cannot make a mistake like that. He's not paid the big bucks to cheat, even on accident.

Eight of 10 survey respondents said they fib about how they are feeling when asked, four of 10 are untruthful about how much money they make and another 40 percent lie about sexual matters. This is stupid. First of all, I don't think that answering "fine" when somebody asks "how are you" even if you are not in the best of moods at that moment should truly be considered a lie. Second of all, I consider the question "how much money do you make" do be one of the most obnoxious questions one can ask. The best reply is "none of your business", but I would not consider answering such a question dishonestly to be a true lie. To equate these with the lies told by a Bill Clinton or someone of that ilk is simply preposterous.

You are correct about casually saying "fine", and inquiries about finances, as for talking about sex, it isn't polite to kiss and tell. But, in the age of Jerry Springer and Bill Clinton, talking about sex seems common place, although it is still impolite to kiss and tell. Impropriety never stopped ratings on televison, or sales of newspapers.

three of 10 couldn't truthfully say they were in love with their spouse
I'd been married maybe five years when I asked some of my
married men friends if they loved their wives. Their responses
were the same as what I was feeling myself.
"I love my kids. But I don't know what is is I feel for my wife."

Do you think it was lost love or just not love in the first place?

I wonder what "evidence" Patterson is referring to.
Maybe this evidence, right after the sentence you cite:
Of his 76 other bats confiscated by baseball officials, none had cork.

I would speculate that man's love for his offspring is different from marital love. Blood is blood, and vows do not a permanency make. Some can do it, some fake it, some feel what they can, and live as if the love for his wife is the same as her love for him. I don't know. Maybe they're not the same at all.
