SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Two students at the University of California at Santa Cruz are facing expulsion and up to a year in prison after stealing an 18-inch (45-cm) koi fish from a campus pond, a university spokeswoman said on Saturday.

Elizabeth Irwin said seniors Matthew Cox and Casey Loop had been charged with theft and malicious mischief after confessing to taking the koi -- Midas, also known as Goldie -- during the early hours of May 20.

The fate of the fish was not known but Irwin said it was rumored to have been cooked and eaten as part of a student prank. "In general the campus has felt a lot of disgust," she said.

Cox and Loop, both members of the Delta Omega Chi fraternity, paid several hundred dollars for a fish to replace Midas, who was believed to have been dragged out of the pond with a rake.

At the time of the theft, the fraternity was being filmed for an MTV reality show on campus life.

Re #1

Yeah. It fits to the profile of UC Santa Cruz to come down hard on this kind of violation. After all, this is where bathroom markings created a national "firestorm" of sex discrimination. It was all because the lady's rooms were marked with a human figure wearing skirts. But somebody like Mumia will get a medal here.

What is next ? Kill somebody's dear pet cockroach and be sent to a jail for a year ?

you know, I used to enjoy MTV, back in the 1980's when they showed music videos ... now I think they may be a Marxist weapon-of-mass-destruction ... if it's not "Jackass", it's something else ... "MTV" keeps popping up in these things ... they underwent a major change about 13 years ago or so and the stupidity has increased 10-fold ...

Even my "liberal" friend (s) complain about the lack of music on "Music Television". It used to be all music, all day, all night (Marianne). Now it's "reality" among the pathetic, nit wit, narcissistic poseurs.

Comment 1: BFD!!! Its a stinkin fish, get over it!

Comment 2: Here is a tip for the frat guys: I had a goldfish, white front with orange back. I went on a business trip and about a week after my return I noticed that the fish didn't look "right." It took my four year old to tell me that "Mom overfed the fish and bought you a new one." The new one had an orange front and white back! Nest fishfry that you have, buy a replacement!
