The Black Panther Party is the subject of growing academic interest as historians born after the 1960s take a new look at a movement known to their generation mostly from movies, memoirs and negative government reports.

Scholars from around the country will meet in Boston beginning today to give more than 40 new papers on the Panthers. Organizers are saying the conference breaks new ground as a scholars-only assessment of the group, which emerged in Oakland in 1966, spread nationally and internationally, and faded out in 1980.

"If you look at the best of the Black Panther Party KKK , they're still needed," he said. "They can fill a void in today's society, when we're moving away from individual freedom, where the state is encroaching on individual rights . . ."

Interesting...

Why do I believe that most of the Panthers have never even heard of Algeria, let alone compared it to the plight of blacks in America?

The BP had definitely heard of Algeria and some escaped warrants by going there.

U.S. Representative Bobby Rush, Illinois Black Panther Party
leader following Fred Hampton's killing.

Wonder if this conference will address David Horowitz's statements that the Panthers were a bunch of murderous thugs?

Big difference between leadership and rank and file Panthers.

The leaders were much more educated and informed than the membership.

They were all street smart. Some were given degrees by their admirers in academia for bogus work. Huey, Elderidge, Bobby Seale, Hilliard, none were educated when they started.

Wonder if they will talk of the limo liberals support of the Black Panthers in the 60s. Maybe they could praise Hillary's work with the Black Panthers when is was at Yale Law School.
