Hue and Cry on 'Whiteness Studies' An Academic Field's Take on Race Stirs Interest and Anger

By Darryl Fears Washington Post Staff Writer Friday, June 20, 2003; Page A01

AMHERST, Mass. -- Naomi Cairns was among the leaders in the privilege walk, and she wasn't happy about it.

The exercise, which recently involved Cairns and her classmates in a course at the University of Massachusetts, had two simple rules: When the moderator read a statement that applied to you, you stepped forward; if it didn't, you stepped back. After the moderator asked if you were certain you could get a bank loan whenever you wanted, Cairns thought, "Oh my God, here we go again," and took yet another step forward.

"You looked behind you and became really uncomfortable," said Cairns, a 24-year-old junior who stood at the front of the classroom with other white students. Asian and black students she admired were near the back. "We all started together," she said, "and now were so separated."

Just to put this all in perspective. Does anyone out there remember what happened when a college intramural team wanted to show how sensitive whites really are when it comes to race? They created a team called the "fighting whitey's" and the slogan was "everything is going to be all white".

They were shocked when they got flooded, not with complaints, but with offers to buy the shirts.

Further in the article, we learn that she took not one but two classes in this field, and appreciated how they gave her a new understanding of what it means to be white. Sorry, but I suspect this chirping bird knew full well she would be doing things like the 'privilege walk', and delighted in the prospect.

It's a form of narcissism on the part of spoiled rich white kids with tribal tats and blond dreadlocks and wispy beards, preening in their willingness to be abused by their peers and professors, flaunting their identification with every downtrodden piece of sh*t in the Third World, declaring solidarity with oppressed people everywhere and for all time, or at least until they get back to the condo Daddy rented for them in Greenwich Village.

It disgusts me that a state school would ladle out this bilge. Leave it to its natural home at Antioch or Haverford or NYU.

N word

Admin Moderators deleted one of my posts that used the evil word you just implied there.

Even here on FreeRepublic derogatory words to describe WHITE people are deemed okay and yet there can be no words mentioned that might be viewed as derogatory to blacks.

It is really high time it stopped.

Can't anyone have the courage to simply resist this endless tirade and the social indoctrination to convince all white people that they were born racist?

I for one am getting tired of the way some Freepers love to throw "trailer trash" around as an insult-and I wonder how many of those who do this are bewildered as to why so many white working class people hate Republicans/conservatives, and think the democrats are "for the working man".

Awhile back, there was an article posted to FR. It was about a man who arranged to have his wife raped to pay off a gambling debt. A horrible betrayal and a monstrous crime? Well, no...according to some of the freepers on that thread, it was funny because the victim lived in a trailer park. At least some of the people on the 'rape' thread expressed sympathy for the victim. But I haven't been so disgusted since the old thread on which people made jokes about a man who survived for several hours after being cut in half at the waist by a diesel rig .

I thought this was going to be a course about "Angry White Man Syndrome" what a disappointment. They have classes for "Black Rage" why not a syndrome that strikes so many when in thier prime?

Simple, you get it Piled higher & Deeper and go peddle the same racist tripe elsewhere at taxpayer expense.
