Declaring that California is running on fiscal fumes, state finance officials "pulled the trigger" Friday to raise the vehicle license fee for at least a year to ease a staggering budget deficit.

"California is broke," said Steve Peace, director of Gov. Gray Davis' finance department. "This is the first time that we've been in a position where we actually have none of our own money. We are operating as of today totally on borrowed cash."

oh yeah, like when was the last time taxes were raised "for a year"?? there's no such thing as a tax with an expiration date. And anyone who falls for that ploy is too stupid to vote.

I've been living here in CA for the last 30 yrs, and i've become increasingly disillusioned and discouraged with the deterioration in the quality of life here and the increasing tax burdens.

I've considered moving out of state (and have read the posts from other CA emigrants), but where? I like living near the ocean, and I like the abundant produce here. Oregon is worse than CA; WA is crazy nuts and too depressing weather. Where else to go? I've thought about Hawaii, but egads, they're a bastion of Democrat liberals...dunno...i just don't like what this formerly lovely state has become.

Yep, when it gets to the point of people trying to pay license fee's early to avoid the tax, there is some serious trouble within a government. It can't go on this way for California, something is going to break and I hope that when it does it isn't a national issue but just a state issue to contend with.

Check out Senator McClintock's site. I have been checking it out from time to time and the Senator appears to have a good handle on whats going on in CA and is very well spoken in his way of conveying his concerns for the state of CA and "Gray out".

Unbelievable! Pleading ignorance about CA registration fees, but is this based on vehicle age, weight, value, or what? I used to have a '99 Tahoe and to the best of my recollection my last fee was about $75/year in Texas. These new CA fees are going to be a huge hardship to low and middle income families, especially those with 2-3 vehicles. Good luck.

In terms of budgeting, I have to assume it will be a hardship for everybody including the rich. However from what I have seen, heard, and read about California in the last few years, maybe budget isn't an appropriate word to be using.

Hopefully this law can be stopped...but even that will take time. Until then, we'll put $ aside in savings every month to ensure timely payment for vehicle registration. heavy sigh
