If he'd have killed her, it'd be murder. This is attempted murder....I do hope one of the conditions of his probation is counseling--and not watching any snuff films.

Guilty of Pre-crime!
Whattsamatter? You never
been ticketed for attempted
speeding? This guy prolly
shouldn't have accepted the
plea bargain. No crime was
committed, IMO.

"suicide chat group"Reminds me of the dialog from Woddy Allen's Play it Again, Sam when he's trying to get a date:
Allen: What are you planning on doing Saturday night?
She: Committing suicide!
Allen: Well... how about Friday night?

Wasn't this like that case in Germany where some guys met online and contracted that one would be killed. This of course after severing his "you-know-what" and cooking it?

He should have gotten a good lawyer. Would have been easy to claim that he never actually planned on killing her, just was gloing to have sex with her then say, "I've changed my mind." After all, some guys will say anything to have sex.

He should take this case to the Supreme Court. I think he's got a decent shot at having the verdict nullified, on the basis of Lawrence v Texas.
How so?

It would be except no one was murdered. Whatever he's been convicted of it certainly not murder since he's simply on probation. "Conspiracy to commit murder" might make some sense but how does one really know if he was going to follow through on it? I'm not saying I know, I'm just not sure what he's been charged with. From the article. Frank Manuel, 55, pleaded guilty to attempted murder
He showed up with a strangulation device and roses

In Japan there is a growing number of internet sucide chat rooms where those considering offing themselves can get together and do it.
Very sad.
Evidently there is some solice in being together when its time to go and also a much higher success rate when done in packs.
The most popular / effective route is carbon monoxide from charcoal lit in sealed room. The Japanese are an odd lot. I really do not see this as becoming and American trend.

this is very creepy.this guy gets turned on by fantasies of killing women durig sex. he trolls suicide hotlines for women who will participate in a sex/murder. who knows if he has already done this. if the police hadn't gotten him, he might have just abducted a woman off the street to kill her during sex. this guy was probably either on his way to becoming a serial sex-murderer or already is one. i agree that the attempted murder charge is a bit far-fetched from a purely legal point of view, but this guy is very, very sick and dangerous.

Well, suicide has always been acceptable, even idealized in Japanese culture. Suicide was the way to restore one's honor no matter what dishonorable acts one had commited.

What is a "strangulation device"? Do they sell them in stores? And since when are roses illegal?
Like I said before, this guy is sick, but there must be more to the story.

Sounds like assisted suicide to me. I guess that Jack the Dripper doesn't get to internet chat rooms much these days.
So much for consenting adults in the privacy of their own homes.

A strangling device could be just about anything, I suppose. A rope, a belt, his hands. I mean, really.
Even so, this is sick.
To: weegee
Maybe he should have used the word 'sodomy' in his plea bargain.... :o

As an amusing footnote, the mentally disturbed, suicidal woman in the story just so happens to be a moderator and regular contributor to everyone's favorite left-wing hate site, Democratic Underground (check out AlienGirl's post in the Lounge, 6/28, 4:01pm).
Having read a few of her posts, it goes without saying that she has always been a rather pathetic character, even by DU's grotesquely low standards, and she has routinely displayed all the emotional and intellectual immaturity that characterizes those on the left. Before you get too teary-eyed, keep in mind that this chick is a card-carrying Bush-hater who was looking for trouble.
In regards to this incident being a "sting", it was, to a certain extent. It seems the bimbo wanted to die (typical liberal), some weirdo obliged, then she had a change of heart and went to the authorities and arranged to set him up. It's not quite clear who came up with idea of the yellow roses, but the "victim" mentioned that they were intended to make him stand out.
Gotta love those wacky DU'ers!

his offer to strangle her during sex, then bury her in a grave in a state forest with a rose on her chest. And they say there's no romance these days.
