Zimbabwe calls Powell 'Uncle Tom'
Guardian | 7/02/03 | Suzanne Goldenberg in Washington

Officials in Zimbabwe hurled racial epithets at the US secretary of state, Colin Powell, yesterday, including branding him an "Uncle Tom" after his attack on President Robert Mugabe in the New York Times last week.

In a deliberate echo of remarks last autumn by the entertainer and activist Harry Belafonte - who said that Mr Powell adopted a docile mien to preserve his status - Zimbabwe's official press called him a liar and a self-effacing servant of his white masters.

The tirade appeared aimed at overshadowing the African tour next week by President Bush and other senior officials including Mr Powell.

Mr Powell branded Mr Mugabe a tyrant and called on neighbouring states to press for his removal.

Mr Powell also promised massive US aid once Mr Mugabe - behind Zimbabwe's disastrous land confiscations and repressive human rights record - had gone.

For his sins, Mr Powell was described in the state-controlled Herald paper as "a disgraceful Uncle Tom who always sang his master's voice to the detriment of social justice and the rights of people of colour".

The paper, which is owned and controlled by the country's information minister, Jonathan Moyo, accused the US secretary of state of lying about rights abuses under Mr Mugabe and distorting the advances under the land reform scheme.

Mugabe is a murderer.
Belafonte is a communist loser.
Powell is neither a murderer nor a communist loser.
(I often disagree with him, but then, I would disband the State Department and just begin shooting.)

Neener, neener, neener to you too !

Calling Powell an "Uncle Tom" is like the kettle calling the pot black (apologies for the pun) as far as Moyo's relationship to Mugabe.

All of ZANU is doing the "shuck-and-jive-dance" instead of confronting Mugabe.

That Moyo is a cutie; from what I've read in your threads and others he's nothing but Mugabe's little yappy dog, and when Mugabe goes Moyo gets kicked out also. Wasn't he the one that took his family on a shopping spree in South Africa and made a total ass of himself? Then when details of his behavior were reported in the SA press, Moyo blew up and called South Africans all kinds of names in the Zim press. Oh he's a serious player all right - NOT!

The only thing interesting about this is how it demonstrates, once again, how American lefty-academia-media-civil rights rhetoric permeates the world.
