Garner: Up to 1 million corpses may be found

By Mark Fineman and John Hendren, Los Angeles Times, 7/3/2003

WASHINGTON -- The former head of the US-led effort to rebuild Iraq said yesterday that investigators would find the corpses of as many as 1 million Iraqis executed during Saddam Hussein's reign.

Reflecting the Bush administration's increasing emphasis on human-rights violations by Hussein -- as more time passes without discovery of weapons of mass destruction -- retired Army Lieutenant General Jay Garner offered the highest such estimate to date by a present or former senior official of the US-led coalition.

''I think before it's all over that we will come close to uncovering 1 million bodies killed from probably in the mid-'80s all the way up to the time of the war,'' Garner said. Garner's estimate of the number of Iraqi citizens slain by Hussein's government in ''killing fields'' scattered mostly in Shi'ite regions of Iraq is plausible, said Ann Clwyd, Britain's envoy to Iraq for human rights.

...snip

''I think 90 percent of the Iraqi people are happy as hell'' that the United States invaded and occupied their country, he said. ''But they're not saying anything because they have the experience of, `He [Hussein] was there with us for 30 years, and nobody has showed me his body yet. And if he comes back, he's going to get even with everybody.

''So they're just sitting there doing nothing. They're fence-sitters just watching,'' he said.

Garner spoke most passionately about the mass graves, especially those near Hillah, the renamed biblical city of Babylon.

''You go stand out in those killing fields and look at them exhume the remains and put them in those plastic bags, some of them aren't any bigger than this,'' he said, holding his arms barely a yard apart. ''They're just kids -- a significant number of them.''

In the court of liberalism and enlightened European opinion.

"You went into Mr. Jeff Dahmer's house with warrant to search for illegal weapons!!!!??!! And all you found was dead bodies!!???"

"You misled the court when you sought a search warrant to seek illegal weapons. This court orders you to release Mr. Dahmer with an apology. And return his dead bodies to him. He looks hungry."

This isn't the half of it. Hussein started the war with Iran. In that war there were over one million casualties.

The man had invaded or attacked three nations that I know of. He had gased his own citizens.

The mere suggestion of anyone objecting to his removal is just plain insane.

For much much less, the UN, the French and the Democrats are crying for the US to enter Liberia.

Take that reward money for the death or live body of Saddam and split it this way: One million for the person or group bringing him in, then $24,000,000 divided equally between all people living within a 5 mile radius of where he's found or captured.

This system will provide cover for those going after him, start the people justifying why they dislike him so, etc., etc., etc.,

FORD and Carter did nothing to stop the massacres in Cambodia.

Bush 1 and Clinton did nothing to stop the massacres in Africa and Iraq.

George W. Bush is a saint sent to rescue the people of Iraq.

He is morally superior to the Pope and every pathetic critic!!!

An excellent analogy! I have been trying to think of one myself to use in my debates with family and friends. This one is perfect!

But so many Liberals, French, Germans, etc. think we should not have liberated Iraq! Go figure.

On the other hand, "up to" one million cat doots might have been deposited in my cats litter boxes in the last 10 years., Heck, maybe it was "up to" a whole billion -- they can be prolific litter critters.

Still, the left will try to justify that this monster had a right to kill more Arabs and Muslims than any person in the history of human events. Sadly, they will continue to blame to miseries of the Arab world soley at Israel's existence.

What is the difference between killing one million people with one million bullets, or killing one million people with one weapon of mass destruction? I don't care if they ever find WMDs in Iraq, Saddam Hussein was the weapon of mass destruction.
