End Of An Era This Weekend

Channel 13 reporting Last Updated: July 2, 2003

The end of an era on the Las Vegas strip is now just days away. After more than 16 thousand performances: the daily Battle of Buccaneer Bay at the Treasure Island is over for good. Tourists say they're sad to see one of the only attractions for children go away.

Its all part of the hotel's plan to become more adult oriented. This fall the name Treasure Island will go. The hotel will just be called the "TI", the show out front will be called the Sirens of TI. It will feature girls wearing far less clothing than the pirates did and probably no eye patches.

Vegas is not and should never be a place to take children.

NATIONAL SEARCH FOR THE SIRENS OF TI BEGINS MONDAY MAY 5 Buccaneer Beauties Wanted For New Treasure Island Pirate Show

LAS VEGAS – The search is on in Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Diego, Phoenix, Miami and Orlando for the women who will change the face of Las Vegas’s most spectacular outdoor show. Treasure Island, in association with Gregg Smith Casting, is looking for The Sirens of TI – part muse, part pirate, part temptress – to play prominent roles in the new Battle of Buccaneer Bay.

These sexy swashbucklers will battle it out with a band of renegade male pirates on the high seas of Treasure Island’s Buccaneer Bay. The new show, a sensual modern interpretation of the Las Vegas favorite, is at the centerpiece of TI’s evolution.

To recreate the entertainment extravaganza, TI’s President Scott Sibella has teamed up with Emmy-Award winning director and choreographer Kenny Ortega. In the hands of Mr. Ortega, the show will feature a fresh new storyline and star the alluring and enticing Sirens of TI. These stunning women will be found during a nationwide search that begins in Las Vegas May 5 and 6, continues in Los Angeles on May 13 and 14, San Diego on May 27 and 28, Phoenix on June 3 and 4, Miami on June 11 and 12 and Orlando on June 18 and 19.

“We’re looking for women with that elusive X factor,” said Mr. Ortega. “Interesting, mysterious, unusual. Temptresses of the sea, who’ll mesmerize the audience with their beauty and sensuality."

Women ages 21-28, physically fit and toned, with talent, charisma, personality and enthusiasm are encouraged to audition in all of the cities. The open casting calls are for dancers, trained in jazz or hip-hop, with gymnastic and aquatic abilities a plus for certain roles and for female singers who also dance. Singers should be contemporary, edgy and fresh and come prepared with 16 bars of pop, rock or R&B ballad with sheet music. An A-list accompanist will be provided or ladies may sing with a tape or CD. Please, no lead vocal on track, even if it is your voice.

Dancing and singing candidates should come dressed in a body-conscious outfit and bring heels. A picture and resume also are requested.

Vegas is not and should never be a place to take children.

There's a Disneyworld for children in Florida.

And a Disneyworld for adults called Las Vegas.

bummer, this was perhaps the second best of the free strip shows (or should that be "free shows on the strip?). I still think the fountains of bellagio is #1 IMHO.

The hotel will just be called the "TI"

All they need is another 'T' on the end.

I'm glad I got to see the show, during FRIVA LAS VEGAS, before it closed.

Just what I was thinking. What kind of family brings their kids to Vegas?

Well, during the 1990s, Las Vegas tried to partially re-make itself into more of a family vacation destination. A few places had it going OK, like Circus Circus (I bet they're scr00ed now). But the fact of the matter is, sin sells more than family, so Vegas is reverting to its sin side.

And a Disneyworld for adults called Las Vegas.

My point exactly.......

When I go to Vegas, the last thing I want to see is a bunch of munchkins running around.........

Right on -- Vegas RULES!

For some folks maybe. It's taken on look of a hot, crowded, loud and gaudy amusement park. I hate crowds and amusement parks.....

Give me a quite mountain lake any day......

Yeah, I remember reading a National Review article by Jonah Goldberg about how Vegas, having attempted to become more "family-oriented" in the 80's, was reverting back to "adult entertainment" (not that it ever much lagged behind in that department).

I don't personally have a moral problem with gambling (except in excess), but I still wouldn't choose to take kids to a town like Vegas. There are much better and more wholesome places for family vacations.

Along the Strip, yes. What's Fremont Street like? I haven't been to that part of Vegas in over 2 decades, before the rise of the Strip.
