Tropical Depression #7 expected to bring heavy rains to SC

(Beaufort SC) -- Scattered heavy thunderstorms are spreading into South Carolina on Friday night as a tropical depression that formed off the Florida coast earlier in the day moved northward toward the state.

At 5:00pm Friday, the poorly defined center of the depression was located near latitude 30.8 north and longitude 80.8 west. That put the storm's center about 45 miles southeast of Brunswick, Georgia. The depression was moving north-northwest at 13 mph and maximum sustained winds were 30 mph with some higher gusts.

A Flood Watch is posted for the Midlands, Lowcountry and Grand Strand. The National Weather Service in Charleston issued a special weather statement saying rainfall amounts of up to one and a half inches could be expected in some storms in Colleton and Hampton Counties. Experts do not expect much strengthening, but they say the system is expected to touch off rain and gusty winds along the Georgia and South Carolina coasts as it moves northward.

The WIS Storm Team expects TD #7 to make landfall between Brunswick and Savannah around 9:00pm Friday night. The depression is expected in the Columbia area sometime around 11:00am Saturday morning. The storm is expected to move through South Carolina and reach Charlotte by 5:00pm.

The South Carolina Emergency Management Division warns people to stay out of flood waters. Joe Farmer says, even though the water may look calm, flood water can be dangerous. Plus the high water could contain bacteria.

There are a few things to remember about floods from emergency management experts. First: never drive through standing water. It may be deeper than it looks.

If your vehicle stalls in high water, do not try to push it out. Many people become trapped trying to move a car from rising water.

Stay well away from flooded creeks and streams. The water may be moving much faster than it looks.

Well, currently it's 9:55 pm Friday, and I'm between Brunswick and Savannah. It's not raining. It is breezy. We've had intermittent drizzle all afternoon, but nothing measurable.

Much worse weather yesterday with the cold front coming through.

If anything changes, I'll post it, though.

That loop is pretty cool. Looks to me like the most rain is going to be just below Savannah, around Richmnond Hill & Keller.

I'd rather "hold" somewhere below 44, but before long no one would believe it anyway...if they would now! ;-)

Rain is steady but not pouring now, and slight upgrade from 'breezy' to 'windy' - enough to make the wind chimes chime, and get most of the covered deck wet. We had a brief stint of rain hard enough to make the DSS quit working, but that only lasted a couple of minutes.

- They never ask me to drop what I am doing and sweep the floor or scrub toilets.
- They never ask me to come back at night to guard the place.
- They don't make me spend every third night at work.
- The factory never deploys.
- I can walk out any time I wish without facing criminal charges.
