I think that the young ladies are not advertising "a great many things". They're pretty much just selling one thing. That's an item that's been for sale for a long, long time. But that doesn't make it right.
The anthropologist in the article says that this behavior is "completely natural", which I believe is true. However, there's this new invention called "civilization" which is supposed to help us move away from "natural" behavior and toward moral, responsible behavior.
