SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Gov. Gray Davis sought today to downplay Democratic defections from a party strategy of unifying against the recall, insisting, ``Virtually everybody in the Democratic Party has solidly stood behind me.''
Meanwhile, attention focused on actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, as advisers said the actor is leaning against running and an announcement could be imminent. That would open the door for former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan, who said he will seriously consider running if Schwarzenegger does not.

I had seen an earlier report in the Merc that 123 folks had requested the intent to file paperwork, this article says 57 officially exploring running.

I'm not a Californian but it seems to me that if the Dems got Feinstein to run and the Republicans (cannibals that we are) field a half dozen candidates, she would win easily. That wouldn't be such a bad thing either. CA is so screwed up that whoever is the next governor will likely go down with the ship. Feinstein is an able and dangerous Rat - better to see her sacrificed for Rat pride.

``Virtually everybody in the Democratic Party has solidly stood behind me.''Just waiting for you to bend over Mr. Davis; they don't really care who they get to give it to, they just can't help themselves. Kind of like the scorpion and the frog story - your nature is your nature...Better BRACE!!!

Whoever becomes Governor is going to have to chop like crazy. Republicans would gain with their constituents for that, but Democrats would lose big.
For this reason, I really don't expect a Feinstein run. That's why she's been supportive of Davis.
That being said, I'd love to know what that nice fellow Brad Sherman is smoking. If Feinstein gets on the ballot, Democrats all over the state are going to vote for her -- and YES on the recall so she'll become governor. I think Feinstein on the ballot would be fatal to Davis - at this point, most Democrats hate him about as much as Republicans do, so if they can find a decent candidate who will win ... they'll be happy to recall Davis.

I have been listening to KFI , John and Ken interview some of the potential candidates.
Some are kind of crazy and others sound pretty good!

``If Dianne Feinstein runs on the second part, she will drive the turnout for the all-important first part,'' Sherman said. ``First and foremost, vote no on the recall. Second, we should unite behind the most prominent Democratic candidate on the second part of the ballot.''Maybe Sherman just didn't explain it very clearly, but if somebody votes NO on the recall of Davis, that voter would not also vote for a candidate to replace Davis. Only those voters who vote YES for the recall of Davis would then vote for a candidate to replace him.

Only those voters who vote YES for the recall of Davis would then vote for a candidate to replace him.ABSOLUTELY WRONG!! This myth has been exploded over and over again, but still it pops up. You can vote YES or you can vote NO or you can not vote at all on the question of recalling Gray Davis. Regardless of what you do on that first question, you can still vote for a replacement candidate on the second ballot question.
