Lord Hutton is to set out how he intends to conduct his inquiry into the death of Government scientist Dr David Kelly.
The preliminary session was set after the Law Lord met Dr Kelly's widow.
At a preliminary hearing, Lord Hutton will explain how he plans to conduct the investigation and possibly outline who he intends to call to give evidence.
He is also expected to hear requests from broadcasters to lift a ban on television cameras at everything but the opening and closing statements.
Media interest is huge, with journalists from all over the world expected in such high numbers that special facilities have been laid on to cope with demand.
After the opening remarks, the inquiry is due to be put on hold until after Dr Kelly's funeral, which takes place next Wednesday near his home in Oxfordshire.
Lord Hutton's terms of reference for the inquiry are limited to the circumstances surrounding the death of Dr Kelly.
The 59-year-old Government scientist bled to death after apparently slitting his left wrist at a beauty spot a few miles away from his country home.
A few days earlier he had been named as the Government mole behind a BBC report that Downing Street "sexed up" its dossier on Iraq's weapons to strengthen the case for war, an allegation the Government denies.

Lord Hutton to lead inquiry
Dr David Kelly
Oooooh... this sounds fascinatingly morbid!
What a fizzle!
The tragic details are he removed his watch and glasses before he slit his wrist - and he was suffering from serious heart disease.
