Bremer Rules in Iraq
The New American ^ | August 11, 2003 | Warren Mass

Posted on 08/03/2003 8:13:04 AM PDT by GatekeeperBookman

Transcribed manually from the magazine, The New American, the official publication of the John Birch Society ( www.JBS.org ), from August 11, 2003, pages 27 & 28 of the printed magazine. Regretably, this article is not 'on line'( I do subscribe & read the magazine ). The latter third is truncated for its predicatable redundancy-though I worked to avoid any change in tone, intent or meaning.

[Accompanied by large photo of Mr. Bremer, with harsh facial expression, standing in front of a private contractor or governmental security agent, who is quite properly poised to employ his rifle ( his hand over the trigger guard, clad in para-military overalls-over civilian style brightly colored shirt, with bulging magazine pouches & pistol, wearing sun glasses & radio ear-piece, scanning the surrounding environment-one can imagine this fellow may be former Special Op's ). They are close in front of U.S. Troops, all adjacent to a crude brick structure, on bare soil, obviously intended to imply the local is Iraq. Mr. Bremer is an attractive man, wedding ring displayed, dark suit & tie, white shirt, looks rather like an American James Bond with left hand on belt, suit coat pulled slightly back. The thought, "Go ahead, make my day" could easily be presumed to be crossing his mind. A rather dark & ominous photo, despite the full sunlight-the effect is deliberate I am sure. Every face in the photo is properly wary, scanning for danger, watching in several directions, one might say worried looking.

Caption of the photo:"Profiting from both ends:Bush appointee L. Paul Bremer seems an odd choice to serve as the civilian administrator to oversee Iraq. After all, he and his former colleagues at Kissenger Associates profited handsomely from building up Saddam's brutal regime in the first place."

Subtitle for article: The Insider network that first built up Saddam Hussein, and then used U.S. military power to topple his regime, has put one of their own in charge of rebuilding Iraq.

"On June 29th, the guest on the BBC Sunday morning news program Breakfast with Frost could not have been more blunt: "We are going to fight them and impose our will on them and we will capture or, if necessary, kill them until we have imposed law and order on this country."

The speaker was L. Paul Bremer, III, the American civilian administrator of Iraq. Former Ambassador Bremer received his assignment on May 6th, when President Bush announced his appointment as "Presidential Envoy to Iraq" to serve as the senior coalition official in that sad and beleaguered nation. In that capacity, Bremer "will oversee Coalition reconstruction efforts and the process by which the Iraqi people build the institutions and governing structures that will guide their future," explained a White House press release. "Ambassador Bremer will report to Secretary of Defense Rumefeld and will advise the President, through the Secretary, on politics designed to achieve American and Coalition goals for Iraq."

From 1989 through 2000, Bremer was the chief operating officer of Kissenger Associates ( KA ). A member of the Council on Foreign Relations ( CFR ), Bremer joined the group after 23 years of service in the U.S. Diplomatic corps under six secretaries of state. In 1983, Bremer was named U.S. Ambassador to the Netherlands, and in 1986, President Reagan appointed him ambassador-at-large for counter-terrorism. In 1999, Speaker of the House Dennis Hastart appointed Bremer as chairman of the National Commission on Terrorism.

The New American for July 17, 2000 noted: "The report of the National Commission on Terrorism 'raises questions about how long Americans can remain free of a ghastly police state,' opined left-wing commentator Carl Rowan in his June 7th syndicated column. To deal with the threat of terrorism, the report demands 'a substantial surrender of [individual] freedoms and...protections against the state.' Rowan summarizes."

One would think that, considering the urgency with which the Bush Administration dismantled Saddam Hussein's regime, some mention of Iraq as a potential "terrorist state" would have been made in the National Commission on Terrorism report published only three years ago. Do "rogue regimes" spring up over night? We might also presume that Mr. Bremer's present position within Iraq implies some extraordinary knowledge concerning the nation. Oddly, Iraq under Saddam Hussein is conspicuous by its absence from the report.

Kissenger Associates [explained]

As The New American reported last January 13th:"[Dr. Henry] Kissenger created his consulting firm during the mid-1980's in collaboration with Brent Scowcroft and Lawrence Eagleberger. The firm gives secret high-level briefings to an equally secretive list of clients. Essentially a form of matchmaking between foreign rulers and corporate and banking interests, KA briefing sessions are conducted orally, with nothing committed to paper.

When Kissenger stepped down from his position as head of the National Commission on terrorist Attacks, he wrote a letter dated December 13, 2002, to President Bush explaining his resignation. Therein, Dr. Kissenger demonstrated his reluctance to have Kissenger Associates involved in controversy: "It is clear that, although specific potential conflicts can be resolved...the controversy would quickly move to the consulting firm I have built and own," he wrote to the President...

Kissenger had good reason to be concerned about his consulting firm becoming mired in controversy. as our December 30, 2002 cover story, "Cover-Up King," pointed out, Kissenger played a key role in financing Saddam's war machine-the same machine that Americans shed their blood to dismantle: "Kissenger has been deeply involved in creating other 'threats' used to justify empowering the UN-particularly Saddam Hussein's Iraqi regime. During the late 1980's, Saddam's regime funded its arms build-up by skimming money from U.S. taxpayer-subsidized agricultural loans. More than $5 Billion was funneled into Saddam's weapons programs this way, much of it passing through Italy's BNL Bank-one of Kissenger Associates most lucrative clients.

Now that the fighting in Iraq is officially over, the former chief operating officer of Kissenger Associates is the de facto ruler of Iraq. How could the CFR-connected occupiers have been more blatant about their determination to keep Iraq under the thumb of their international cronies?

Life Under Bremer

An educated Iraqi familiar with U.S. history might get nervous about the phrase in the White House press statement: "Bremer will oversee Coalition reconstruction efforts..."

...How could anybody be enthusiastic about being 'overseen' by a foreigner? ...A steady stream of stories...indicate that Iraqis may be becoming disenchanted...

... Thousands of sacked Iraqi soldiers threatened Monday to launch suicide attacks... ...squabbling tribes told the Americans they could face war if they did not leave soon.

...Despite the unrest, however, Bush Administration seems eager to entrench itself ever deeper into the Iraqi quagmire...security will stay in the Coalition's [Bremer's] hands...

...Readers...may not be as surprised by CFR member Bremer's decision to include a communist in his council...

And, as we have seen, L. Paul Bremer III, the Kissenger Associates alumnus with sterling insider credentials, will be running Iraq indefinitely. It should be the fodder of a major scandal that members of the same Insider network that first built up Saddam Hussein, and then used U.S. military power to dismantle him, should now be in charge of rebuilding what they have destroyed. And to think that Michael Milkin went to prison for mere "insider trading'." What would be the appropriate penalty for Insider treason-aiding and supporting a foreign enemy such as Saddam?"

Mr. Bush is perhaps, above reproach, personally. His resume is far cleaner than many, his character open & honest. The words moral & decent leap to mind. He is fun to see & hear. Entirely reassuring. Not quite Reagan-but a swell guy none the less.

His inheritance & the baggage of the office ( & of the larger government ), however, are regrettably far larger than that from his own family. So too, the multi-hued facets of the governmental & extra-governmental entities is troublesome. He works with what the system gives him-and much of it is dark indeed. Also, many of HIS policies ( love of open borders, criminal immigration & infatuation with The Fox, expansion of government spending, abrogation of freedoms by the Homeland Security machine, etc ) are so disturbing I nearly avoid the reference. He is not my ideal President & may not even deserve the campaign donation & vote I gave.

All that aside, however, the nature of the attacks on him & the manner of what passes for conservative analysis in the media gives me pause. A very real distortion of facts is readily perceived in many articles & the above is a prime example. I run from the hostile assualts on the President-in The New American & many web sites which can't print with out the phrase 'Neo-Conservative' ( presumably, 'Neos' are always very bad people ). The JBS.org publishes a book which clearly defines Mr. Buckly as a CIA operative. Conspiracies are given flesh & blood-even muscle with which to breathe & act. The attacks & hostile columns of some amoung the regular posters at some of these web sites are beyond my capacity to describe-or continue to read. Much of what I refer to may be true-BUT!!!...The real problems, & possibly their solutions, are fairly obliterated by the hostile & snide painting of any & all actors with the same dark brush-so, hopefully, expectantly, I have provide this fresh meat for our dissection-and hopefully edification.

AGAIN, however, the actions & nature of the Kissenger-UN-New World Order-international corporations-'defense-cum-infrastructure-contractors' MUST be regarded with extreme suspicion.

Just why is Mr. Bremer 'our man' on scene? His resume is impressive & proper-save for the curious commercial connections of the mysterious Kissenger Associates.

Has this question been addressed elsewhere-do I make an error to raise it when others, far more informed, astute & appropriate have explained the questions of a mere simpleton like me?? Does the CFR give no one else pause?? Does Henry the K?? Why should not a, shall we say, less controversial employee of the government be our man on scene?? Has the ever-present KA already bought option on office space for their next assignment(s) in Tehran, Damascus, et al?? Is the imagination of a simpleton running far too hard on this??

Oh, but I think the Iraq attack was quite justified, very logical. Just too bad so many strange associates of Henry the K show up-like camp followers. I do believe that Saddam was a main man for the terror orgs-many of them. I've seen & heard reports from original sources which explain his actrive & direct support. I do not think the Iraq Attack was on 'false pretenses' We do have real enemies with which we must deal-I say cook 'em. Pull our guys out, abandon the Iraqis to their own fate & pump the oil-split the revenues till the bill is paid ( with handsome awards to all families of casualties & dead ). then call Boots & Coots & cement the wells. Show them & the world who is boss.

The larger geo-political picture demands we counter the ChiComs & a Russia now run by the KGB & their Mafia. Some dead bad guys ( really, a very large pile ) will make those who pull their strings stop & think before they do it again. Might even make some other ME countries eject the CHiCom & Russian agents. Ditto Central & South America, Africa ( the real reason for the trip there was not AIDS or domestic votes ).

We have fish to fry. Get some hot oil. Tell the UN, World Bank, the EU 'PU' to but out. Tell KA & the Neo's they will have to make do with the profits from OUR defense contracts.

1. Iraq was ready to launch wmd in 45 minutes and we couldn't wait for the UN because they weren't coming up with anything and 2. al queda connections. Both were patently false beyond any doubt. therefore false pretenses.

How about 3) so that we could get our troops out of Saudi Arabia (the supposed reason for OBL and 9/11 in the first place) and couldn't possibly do that with Saddam still in power?

"the nature of the attacks on him & the manner of what passes for conservative analysis in the media gives me pause. A very real distortion of facts is readily perceived in many articles & the above is a prime example. "

I concur. And here I started to think kindly of JBS because they've been for the US pulling out of the UN for a long time, and IMO they were and are right about that one

However, judging from the article you posted, they have gone off the deep end with their conspiracy theories, about as bad as the far left, which is too bad. I think they should stop the nonsense, there are many conservative causes they could focus on, and come up withpositive suggestions. They would have more credibility that way, and could do some good. I think they should support President Bush, that finally we have a president who is making the US and the world safer, they should stand up for strong defense and missile defense, stand up for the war on terror, for tax cuts, cutting useless spending by Congress, and so on.

Apparently Bremer is a tough, "can do" guy, who is also very personable, and has experience with anti-terrorism, all of which are excellent qualifications for his current position, and results achieved seems to indicate he is the right man for the job.

Not everything is a conspiracy. Kissinger Associates tap the talents of high level people, and they provide advice, based on their years of experience and wisdom. There is nothing "suspicious" about that.

Thanks for taking the time to transcribe the article and posting it.

They make valid points with real facts. Their slant is a bother & gives one reason for caution-not for making fun of serious problems. I do like the picture however. But, I shall attempt to make a better hat. I know I can.

45 minutes or 45 days-seems not to matter. I am sure that Saddam was a very important supporter of the terror orgs-many of them. I saw many independent sources for that.

Lacking virtue, no one would get up & go to work to produce that tax money, which buys the weapons & fuels the machine of war. We are almost there. Not many actually care.

Kissenger Associates is a very highly paid org. It has info & contacts of a higher order than, say the media & ordinary business execs. Their influence & access make them suspicious for me & others.

I think the JBS does very good work-on this & many other issues. I also think factions like those who activley support the JBS also allow themselves to be blinded to other views. Thus I posted to illustrate that point & mean no slam against JBS.

Before you hurl any more slurs against JBS ( or such as me who do read their mag ), you might want to actually READ what they publish.

I am very glad you posted. Thank you!

This should be THE daily thread, instead of some fatuous & slavishly blind "DAY in the Life..." crap!

How about several Day in the Life threads??? Of the Defense worker-with security clearance, ( whose job vanished to China ), of the IT, hardware, software worker whose job went to Dell's new plants in China, Russia, India, Malaysia???
