[history]
The law has divided pro-life and pro-family groups. Some pro-family groups oppose welfare and extra public funding for welfare moms, while pro-life groups say the family caps have been proven to encourage poor women to have abortions.
The court, in a 7-0 decision, upheld the family caps.

A welfare mother identified only as Sojourner A., said the policy compelled her to have two abortions because she could not afford to support the children.
"Shame on New Jersey for placing women in this position,"
Shame on women who murder their offspring if theres no state-provided profit to be made from their existence.

She would have had the abortion anyway. They make it sound like abortion was next to nothing with welfare mothers when the money was there.

There appears to be some hope for NJ courts. How about these "women" use the old Catholic method of borth control - a St. Joseph asprin....held tightly between the knees!!!

Even a broken clock is right twice a day? Exactly! Twice in one day; who'd a thunk it? Or is it just that they so love having the government telling people what to do, they didnt realize it was also a restriction on self destructive behavior having to do with sex which they usually like to promote? Or whatever.

THIS happened in NJ? Wow, I'm completely blown away.
Critics said the law was unconstitutional because it was designed to coerce poor women into choosing not to have babies.
Words fail me.

It's worth noting that this law was passed under a Democratic administration (I believe), and sponsored by assemblyman Bryant of Camden -- a black Democrat.
I only point this out because there is no way in hell a Republican in New Jersey would have had the political will to support this -- the bill is a thinly-disguised attempt on the part of the state of New Jersey to purge poor minorities from the state's urban centers.

BullS**t - no one forces a woman to have an abortion. Adoption is always an alternative... Of course, normally a woman isn't forced to get herself pregnant either... Bittom line though, is no matter what the 'choice', society should not be forced to pay for someone else's careless *******...

Adoption is always an alternative... How difficult is it for a woman who can't afford to spend money on a pregnancy to receive the necessary prenatal and delivery care so she can give a child for adoption?

"They are not solving the root causes of the problem. The emphasis should be on child support and not eliminating children," Foster explained. This lady is nuts. The problem IS the hordes of children being born to irresponsible women who have no means to support them and no intention of developing any means to support them. We DO want to eliminate those children. Reasonable people can differ on whether abortion should be part of the mix, but anyone who insists we shouldn't do anything to cut down on these births isn't playing with a full deck. Does Foster also think we should deal with the births to early adolescents by providing more "child support" and not by taking measures to reduce births to girls in this age group?
Amazingly the figures cited indicate that over 90% of these welfare moms figured out how to use birth control once they learned they wouldn't be getting a raise if they had another child; less than 10% of the reduction in births was accounted for by abortion.

Oddly enough I knock pro-life groups down over this one. Its not too much to ask welfare mothers to keep their legs closed is it? Just what we need: socialism for life. I'd never thought I'd see the liberal SCONJ go for ANY kind of welfare cap!

HaWell, for one thing, I've seen many childless couples who have paid for the OB-GYN for the mothers whos baby they were planning to adopt - granted that doesn't always happen.
Secondly, New Jersey is one of the states that has 'Safety Net Providers', which also features OBGYN care, which basically take 'charity cases', such as moms on welfare, poor people with no medical insurance etc...

I could only afford two children (time and money and wanting to do it right) so I only got pregnant 3 times (one ended in miscarriage). We took steps to limit our children because we, my husband and I (and our parents, by their choice and love) were/are responsible for their care, education, and proper rearing.
Pregnancy does not just happen to a woman. Good grief, I can't understand women who have one baby after another, especially not to a woman with small children who wear her out emotionally and physically. Who wants sex, when there's a child clinging to you all day and/or you work all day and then have to figure out how to pick them up at daycare and feed them before bedtime?
There must be a man involved who, for some reason is not worn out physically and emotionally by the care of the woman's children. Where is he in these stories? In Texas, public assistance depends on reporting the name of the father, who will be made aware of his responsibilities - at least the financial ones - by the State.
But, if we could somehow make the *males* the primary caregivers......
That's it - give 'em the choice of paying child support or working in a daycare and then going home and fixing supper. If all the men had to stay home all day with a two year old clinging to their legs or on their hips while they tried to accomplish something, anything, then there'd sure be less sex in the country.

Nowhere in the law does it say that a woman who can't afford to raise a child must have an abortion.
