Dentists warn of harm by oral jewelry

Damage: Tongue and lip piercings can increase the risk of gum disease, infections and tooth loss, researchers say.

People who jab gold studs through their lips and pierce their tongues with silver bars aren't usual eager to hear a learned discourse on gum disease. But Dr. John K. Brooks tries anyway: Oral jewelry, he tells them, can cost you a tooth.

"The patients I've been successful with are the ones that had pain and infection. They're much more ready to be convinced," the Mount Airy dentist says.

Brooks and two colleagues at the University of Maryland Dental School say there is growing clinical evidence that oral piercings increase the risk of gum disease, painful infections and tooth loss.

But having a gram of neurotoxic metal like mercury 5 inches from your brain is a-OK.

Couple of years ago I saw a special on HBO about body piercing and jewelry placed in the most unusual places. The one that cracked me up laughing was the one called Prince Albert (PA). The head of man's penis was pierced and a gold earring loop was inserted. Imagine the pain.

Yikes! Just makes you want to grab 'em and pull 'em apart, doesn't it?

Oh, man, sick!

Imagine the embarrassment when the ring gets locked in his girlfriend's braces and they have to go to the hospital to have it cut off. (I know that's sick, too, but eight years of Clinton does that to you.)

Ugly! How they can do that to themselves, I'll never, ever, understand. But it's probably better that I won't ever understand.

I've wondered about that. Do folks get these oral piercings for the look? For the feel?

What is the attraction?

I've noticed the people who have these piercings are usually ugly so maybe it is the only way they can get any attention.
For guys, they probably have um, ... small equipment, shall we say.

It is? If so, I'm sorry. I'll have to check the list again, but I don't remember SunSpot being on the list.

The Baltimore Sun is owned by Tribune, who also owns the L.A. Times. Excerpting is necessary for that site.

No problem . . . Where is the list, anyhow, Spiff? I've never seen it.

It definitely wouldn't allow me to post the whole article. Apparently, SunSpot is part of the Baltimore Sun and the Sun is on the list.

There it is. Page 15 of the final settlement. I think I'm going to put an easier to read, alphabetized version of the list on my Profile page so that it can be easily accessed and searched.

He's got the money to get that done, but I'll bet he has to get foodstamps to eat (BTW, is that a guy or a girl?)

Done! Click on my name and you'll see the list on my profile page. Man, that was a lot of typing. But now FReepers can search and use an alphabetized list.
