Cops Run Through Day Care To Arrest Suspect
Parents Angry That Police Try To Arrest Robbery Suspect In Day Care
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Police wearing bulletproof vests ran though a day-care center looking for a robbery suspect Tuesday morning, witnesses said.
"I had a sinking feeling of panic, for our workers, for our children," day-care worker Joy Ennis told Channel 4's Jennifer Waugh.
Ennis said her heart dropped when she saw police cars rush into the day care parking lot to arrest robbery suspect Derrick Muse (pictured left), whose children attend the day care.
"They assured me that everything would be off of the premise ... but it was not," Ennis said.
Ennis said police were supposed to arrest Muse after he drove off the day-care premise. Witnesses said Muse saw police cars while he was in the infant room of the day care dropping off his child, so he ran into the toddler room telling workers "I'm not going to jail today." Witnesses said Muse eventually ran out the back door.
Police arrested Muse about two miles from the day care.
"I wouldn't have thought that they would have decided to corner someone at a day care where there were children," said Robin Carter, whose children stay at the center.
Police said they did not know where Muse's house was, and they do not make a habit of making arrests at day cares.
"We should have planned a little bit better and concealed ourselves a little bit better," Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Asst. Chief Steve Weintraub said.
No children were hurt.
