It's the middle of August,
it's hotter than July
& Murphy's law makes your car's ac die!
Swindled by EPA trained repair facility, you don't realize this heavier than air gas miraculously floated up miles into the sky(King's New Clothes?).
Yet, the tech manual instructs you to suck it up off the floor if you spill it.
When I was not an old man(sigh), I could go to any store and buy a can of r12 for a buck & fix my own ac.
btw-same amount of freon as in a can of hairspray, etc.
Now, way too many of us are way too hot because we don't have a thousand dollars for someone else to do the same thing "for us"(aka,"to us").

All the research that the enviro-nazi's bought & peddled hook, line, and sinker was sponsored by a well known company not wanting it's patent on r12 to pass into public domain.
They couldn't improve on r12(it's perfect) so an older formula was pass off as "new improved"(134a) because it could be patented.
134a is harder to compress, gas mileage is affected & compressor's heat up & break more often.
134a is a smaller molecule, so it leaks easier & when it does it can break down into H2S(nasty stuff, i.e. cough, cough, I feel like I just smoked a pack of PALL MALL's).
I guess it's just "biznis" as usual. But, I'm steammed!
What do you think?

All you need to know is that DuPont, maker of R-12, has a large presence in Tennessee. As does Alghour.

There's also the matter of that Montreal Protocol that the Greens pushed that makes the manufacture or use of R12 and similar products illegal in the CIVILIZED world, but ok in the Third World, China, and Russia. . .

Don't get me on the subject of freon. That's a sore subject with me. I have two older vehicles--76 truck and 79 Lincoln. When I ran out of the older freon, I was informed that either I do without air conditioning or I change my vehicle air conditioning system courtesy of the EPA new rules. Considering that the summer weather is upwards of 100 degrees, I changed one system. The cost $1200-$1500 just because the Clintoonian/algourd's EPA decided to have new rules. That was about 5 years ago. I still remember and won't forget.

I know, I also have two "oldster roadsters" I love.
Remember the r12!
It's the new "Remember the Alamo".

I will translate your post into plain english- because I have stated the same theory in the past.
-Dupont held the patent on Freon.
-There is nothing else like freon, it is the best product in the world for cooling systems.
-It was worth billions of dollars a year- perhaps adding up into trillions.
-When the patent life cycle was running out they began to support enviro-nuts who deemed freon to be 'harmful to the ozone' and must be banned. (no science supports the process by which this could happen)
-No other company can now make freon, and reap the billions in profits.
-But guess who makes the replacement product?
For these kinds of dollars, wouln't you spend a few million?
People are dying because freon cooling is not available to bring medicines which require cooling to 3rd world countries. Your AC now works like $hit because of this.
But the profits are protected.

Fix the leak and recharge the system yourself. The tech message board at
aircondition.com is of great assistance - the regulars who post there really know their stuff. Your biggest challenge will be finding an inexpensive vacuum pump. You might also consider this:
Go to epatest.com and download the "study material" for the Section 609 exam. You can take the test online for twenty bucks, after which you will receive your "Registered Technician" credentials. Once you've got that, you can buy R-12 in the 1-pound cans off of eBay. It's more than a dollar per can, but the price beats having to convert to R-134a or buy the $$$ 30-lb. canister of R-12.

And Freon is still being made in Mexico (and is smuggled up here in tanks with propane labels!)

Is it true that you can actually buy the 30-lb cylinders without a license? I heard it's legal, but the supply houses won't hear of it.

Your right I believe, as to the root cause of the change to 113. However, you can convert your old system to the new freon. It's the oil that is not compatible. If you remove the old lubricant and replace it with the new oil it will work OK. (you can get the new lubricant at the auto store. F113 is available also in the auto store.
Perhaps it does, but it does not need to cost thousands of dollars to convert.

After being told I needed to pay about $1300 to replace the compressor and convert the system, I just bought adapter fittings and added a few small cans of 134 to see if it would work. Still blowing cold air after more than a year.

Not to mention that the freon ban is most likely the underlying cause of the underlying cause of the Columbia disaster. See
Lost in Space. Thank you AlGore.

"Your biggest challenge will be finding an inexpensive vacuum pump."
Vacuum pumps are easy and cheap. Find an old refrigator or freezer, pull out the compressor along with the starting cap. and ac cord. Just let the old freon (it's f22) from the refrig escape into the air, and you have a decient vacuum pump.
You can also use the same pump to pump up tires...

Thanks, you too, ffusco("I Can't Believe It's Not Freon?"), I laughing & sweating.
My problem is I asked an ac tech to recharge my old Dynasty with r12, behind my back he snuck 134a in.
I have a mixed freon problem now & a fried compressor due to the compressor oil not mixing with the mixed freon.
I wish I could sue somebody, I sure feel torted!

well get ready because that R-22 that is in your home a/c is on it's way out too. We that own heating air companies don't like this any better that the consumer does. Or most of us any way.
To: norraad
see my post 12. I forgot to mention I also added a can of oil. Did not pump out anything, just added. Did not know it mattered, just figured it needed oil. Dumb luck that it works, I guess.

Check to see if you can buy "freeze 12" in your area. I buy it from Carquest. It is a good, direct replacement for R-12.

Thank you all, in minutes I have more help & understanding than years out in the "world of comerce".
btw-how did the enviro-nazi first dream up the r12 ozone lie? I can't even compute the logic of the original lie.
