CHARLOTTE, N.C. - A national air pollution study found that Riverside, Calif., has the nation's worst air quality, with an average of 148 unhealthy air days a year.
The next four cities on the list were all in California: Fresno, Bakersfield, Los Angeles-Long Beach and Sacramento.
The Charlotte area has the 11th worst air quality in the nation, the second time this year the area has appeared on a bad air list, the Washington-based Surface Transportation Policy Project said Tuesday.
The American Lung Association in the spring said the area has the 10th worst smog in the country. It has been on the bad-air top 10 list four straight years.
Air pollution means more asthma and heart disease, researchers say.
The study also showed that air pollution problems are worsening in North Carolina and South Carolina, with Greenville-Spartanburg's air problems growing faster than any other U.S. city's.
Other North Carolina urban areas had some dirty air, the study said. The Greensboro area ranked 32nd nationally and Raleigh 34th, both with about 17 unhealthy air days annually.
Findings of the study may be partially weather-related because the second half of the past decade featured the hot and dry conditions that favor elevated ozone levels, said Lewis Weinstock of the Forsyth County Environmental Affairs Department, which is the leader for the region's air monitoring.
The Surface Transportation Policy Project is a group that wants more public spending on transit, sidewalks and bicycling to reduce the nation's dependence on cars. The American Public Health Association (news - web sites) and the American College of Emergency Physicians (news - web sites) also participated in the study, which used 2000-2002 data from the Environmental Protection Agency (news - web sites).
The research group said more driving is the chief cause of worsening air quality, even though vehicle emissions are 90 percent cleaner than 30 years ago.
Americans are driving 162 percent more miles than they did in 1969, or about 5 percent more annually. In Charlotte and Mecklenburg County, mileage increased an average 6.5 percent annually.
Rounding out the top 10 were Pittsburgh; Knoxville, Tenn.; Birmingham, Ala.; Houston and Baltimore.

All the crap trapped in the Los Angeles-Long Beach basin gets blown over the hills to Riverside
Hasn't MTBE been phased out, because it was polluting the groundwater?
I was in California a few weeks ago, and saw several 76 stations advertising "NO MTBE."
Well the far end of Long Beach is clear up by the 91.... but then again they call it L.A/Long Beach so they might be just grouping the whole basin
I knew that Riverside would be the worst before I even got to the article. If you want to live in California, you should live as close to the ocean as possible. ;-)
There are in excess of 32 million people in California...You watch too much TV and believe everything you're told.
Promotion of Social Equity and Livable Communities
"The transportation system should be socially equitable and strengthen civil rights; enabling all people to gain access to good jobs, education and training, and needed services. Where possible, personal transportation expenses should be minimized in ways that support wealth creation. Integrated with land use planning, transportation should also enhance the quality, livability and character of communities and support revitalization without displacement. The transportation system should allow every American to participate fully in society whether or not they own a car and regardless of age, ability, ethnicity, or income."
From about the Georgia/ So. Carolina state line to the Pennsylvania/New York state line
You guys in the south want to be grouped in with the Yankees and vise versa?
Then let's just stifle mobility. We don't have to be mobile anyway. I think we should go for a "government issued travel permit" that is issued upon payment of such permit. That way we can clear the air, help the government promote itself financially, and cut into our personal finances to the point that we can't afford to travel in the first place. The offshoot benefits would be that we could put those "evil" SUV manufacurers out of business, make for hard times in Saudi Arabia, and stifle the controversy over ANWAR! All in all we would be happier, cleaner, and more obedient. This scenario couldn't be so bad could it?
Anybody interested in buying a bridge?
Indeed they did. Shows their true agenda, IMO. They're just plain old Marxists, using econutism as a mechanism for inflicting pain on to businessmen and regular people.
