Study: Calif. City Has Worst Air in U.S.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - A national air pollution study found that Riverside, Calif., has the nation's worst air quality, with an average of 148 unhealthy air days a year.

The next four cities on the list were all in California: Fresno, Bakersfield, Los Angeles-Long Beach and Sacramento.

The Charlotte area has the 11th worst air quality in the nation, the second time this year the area has appeared on a bad air list, the Washington-based Surface Transportation Policy Project said Tuesday.

The American Lung Association in the spring said the area has the 10th worst smog in the country. It has been on the bad-air top 10 list four straight years.

Air pollution means more asthma and heart disease, researchers say.

The study also showed that air pollution problems are worsening in North Carolina and South Carolina, with Greenville-Spartanburg's air problems growing faster than any other U.S. city's.

Other North Carolina urban areas had some dirty air, the study said. The Greensboro area ranked 32nd nationally and Raleigh 34th, both with about 17 unhealthy air days annually.

Findings of the study may be partially weather-related because the second half of the past decade featured the hot and dry conditions that favor elevated ozone levels, said Lewis Weinstock of the Forsyth County Environmental Affairs Department, which is the leader for the region's air monitoring.

The Surface Transportation Policy Project is a group that wants more public spending on transit, sidewalks and bicycling to reduce the nation's dependence on cars. The American Public Health Association (news - web sites) and the American College of Emergency Physicians (news - web sites) also participated in the study, which used 2000-2002 data from the Environmental Protection Agency (news - web sites).

The research group said more driving is the chief cause of worsening air quality, even though vehicle emissions are 90 percent cleaner than 30 years ago.

Americans are driving 162 percent more miles than they did in 1969, or about 5 percent more annually. In Charlotte and Mecklenburg County, mileage increased an average 6.5 percent annually.

Rounding out the top 10 were Pittsburgh; Knoxville, Tenn.; Birmingham, Ala.; Houston and Baltimore.

Riverside exists on the west end of a long coneshaped valley that feeds a lot of L.A. area smog right into it. I have heard it said that this area had air problems all they way back to the 1800s, because campfires fed smoke into this area, but I have no real substantive proof that is correct.

Some of these cities may have bad smog numbers, but I'd be surprised if they are worse than other cities.

California has additives in it's gas that have been put there to reduce particulate output. This rating doesn't gell with the reality of the situation.

Long Beach is right on the coast. I'm sorry but the prevailing winds along the coast drive smog away almost every day of the year. I cannot fathom Long Beach having higher smog than inland cities. It just doesn't compute.

This is something So Cals have known for years. Valleys and canyons funnel the bad air from the LA basin straight to Riverside. One more reason I'm glad I live near the beach.

Long Beach extends a good deal inland. Maybe they took the worst area and damned the whole city.

Sadly, Riverside is really not responsible for its own air

All the crap trapped in the Los Angeles-Long Beach basin gets blown over the hills to Riverside

Hasn't MTBE been phased out, because it was polluting the groundwater?

I was in California a few weeks ago, and saw several 76 stations advertising "NO MTBE."

Well the far end of Long Beach is clear up by the 91.... but then again they call it L.A/Long Beach so they might be just grouping the whole basin

I knew that Riverside would be the worst before I even got to the article. If you want to live in California, you should live as close to the ocean as possible. ;-)

There are in excess of 32 million people in California...You watch too much TV and believe everything you're told.

Not entirely true. I grew up in and around Riverside and still go back to see high school and college friends occasionally. Riverside and San Bernardino still get a lot of LA's smog blown in, but the cities and particularly the suburbs have built up heavily in the last decade or two. I'm not surprised that the area's high up on the list, only maybe that it was number one.

Promotion of Social Equity and Livable Communities

"The transportation system should be socially equitable and strengthen civil rights; enabling all people to gain access to good jobs, education and training, and needed services. Where possible, personal transportation expenses should be minimized in ways that support wealth creation. Integrated with land use planning, transportation should also enhance the quality, livability and character of communities and support revitalization without displacement. The transportation system should allow every American to participate fully in society whether or not they own a car and regardless of age, ability, ethnicity, or income."

You do realize California is about the size of a good chunk of the east cost

From about the Georgia/ So. Carolina state line to the Pennsylvania/New York state line

You guys in the south want to be grouped in with the Yankees and vise versa?

Yes, but I believe they put some ethanol in there to make the gas burn more completely to replace the MTBE. At least that was the intent the last I heard. Perhaps someone can clarify that.

As for MTBE, it was hard to leave that unaddressed in my comments. It was a known carcinogen from the start about ten years ago. People protested immediately and the state acknowledged the problem long before it corrected the error. The GANG-GREEN set remained mute during the whole process, pefectly happy to see their carcinogen introduced into the environment, reather than admit how full of ---- they had been when they ramrodded it through.

Thanks. And I realize LB has some refineries in it. I wouldn't be surprised if they camped right outside one of them to get an average figure... (ahugh)

Then let's just stifle mobility. We don't have to be mobile anyway. I think we should go for a "government issued travel permit" that is issued upon payment of such permit. That way we can clear the air, help the government promote itself financially, and cut into our personal finances to the point that we can't afford to travel in the first place. The offshoot benefits would be that we could put those "evil" SUV manufacurers out of business, make for hard times in Saudi Arabia, and stifle the controversy over ANWAR! All in all we would be happier, cleaner, and more obedient. This scenario couldn't be so bad could it?

Anybody interested in buying a bridge?

Indeed they did. Shows their true agenda, IMO. They're just plain old Marxists, using econutism as a mechanism for inflicting pain on to businessmen and regular people.
