A giant asteroid is heading for Earth and could hit in 2014, U.S. astronomers have warned British space monitors.

But for those fearing Armageddon, don't be alarmed -- the chances of a catastrophic collision are just one in 909,000.

Asteroid "2003 QQ47" will be closely monitored over the next two months. Its potential strike date is March 21, 2014, but astronomers say that any risk of impact is likely to decrease as further data is gathered.

Big news. FR needs another We're all gonna die! thread. This asteroid has no chance to hit earth since it will be observed and cataloged, and that makes us safe.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/974430/posts. There is a way to make links out of URLs on FR.

Type this: < a href=" before the URL and " > after, but without the spaces after the left carat and before the right carat. Then type something followed by < /a > to stop the link.

I'm not worried.

Poohbah, this is one case where large-scale expendable rockets would be useful.

Lob four (4) B53s at said asteroid. Have a couple more ready to go if needed, "just in case." Thirty-six megatons ought to be enough to make the asteroid go away.

Actually, 36 megatons would barely make a large asteroid move at all.

What we'd really need for this issue is Orion--nuclear detonations boosting a HUGE payload. All you need for launching the damn thing is a chunk of the Earth that you don't mind turning into a radioactive wasteland. I vote for Tripoli, Libya. :o)

And then we use about 6,000 or so nukes to push the asteroid out of the ecliptic.
