Sunset of the AWB in the 1994 Crime Bill

View Current Signatures   -   Sign the Petition

To:  U.S. Congress, Senate, President of U.S.A.

We the undersigned, believe the current Assault Weapon and High Capacity Magazine Ban found in the text of HR3355 “VIOLENT CRIME CONTROL AND LAW ENFORCEMENT ACT OF 1993” (As passed by the House on August 21, 1994 and subsequently approved by the Senate on August 25, 1994); TITLE XI-FIREARMS, SUBTITLE A-ASSAULT WEAPONS, should sunset as provided by SEC. 110105. EFFECTIVE DATE, paragraphs (1) and (2).

This ban has not reduced crime by preventing criminals from obtaining these firearms. Criminals by their very nature will not obey this or any other law when it comes to their illegal enterprises. However, this legislation has put hurdles before the law abiding citizens to legally purchase these firearms. As they relate to the 2nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, these firearms are not sporting arms. The 2nd Amendment is not about hunting or sport, but individual protection. It should be noted that many of these arms are used for sporting purposes, such as competitive shooting, and within the laws, hunting.

The ban on these firearms is based on cosmetic features that do not enhance their ability to function any better than firearms that do not have them. A ban on high capacity magazines also does not reduce crime or deaths. All this does is making it harder for the law abiding to exercise their right to protect themselves. As pointed out before, the criminal element will use what ever they can get, regardless of the consequences of disobeying the law.

Honorable members of the House and Senate, we urge you, please do not put foreword a renewal of this ban.

Mr. President, we urge you, please do not sign a renewal of this ban if it comes to you.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned

On the positive side - since Clinton signed the assault weapons ban there have been no drive-by bayonetings in my neighborhood.

Done. I can't remember how many of these things I've signed on to. Too bad they never seem to make the signatures searchable.

I'm trying to resist the urge to support the firearms industry by purchasing a new Kimber Carry at my local gun store. I don't "need" it, but it's sure a nice looking pistol.

I know what you mean. My wife likes this one in .40 S&W.

Do you know how hard it is NOT to buy something when you know your wife would love it, but whine about the expense?

The AW Ban has made my neighbhood into a living hell. Since a person can't possess Assualt Weapons, they have turned to poorly trained (and ill tempered) monkeys to bare their arms. This pic was taken last week less than a block from my front porch. Pray for Mojo.

Owning firearms isn't about what you hope WILL happen. Owning them is part of being prepared for what you hope will NEVER happen.

That being said, if China decides to stop being friendly, would you prefer to have your ten shot pistol, or an AR varient with as many hi-cap mags as you can get your hands on when their 2 million strong army comes across the wire?

You are very right about the catharsis value as well. There is something very satisfying about making a coffee can dance. ;-)

I signed it months ago. Mailed letters and sent e-mails to my congressman and both senators.

May need to do it again.
