Wolfowitz backtracks from statements linking al-Qaida and Saddam loyalists
Associated Press ^ | 09-12-03

Posted on 09/12/2003 5:39:58 PM PDT by Brian S

Pentagon-AP -- The Pentagon's number-two man says he misspoke when he claimed a "great number" of al-Qaida operatives are trying to link up with remnants of Saddam Hussein's regime in Iraq.

Paul Wolfowitz had said key lieutenants of Osama bin Laden are plotting with Saddam loyalists to kill Americans in Iraq.

The deputy defense secretary made the claim in T-V and newspaper interviews on the anniversary of the September eleventh attacks.

Wolfowitz now tells the A-P he misspoke because he didn't anticipate questions about Iraq in interviews about the September eleventh anniversary.

He says the U-S military is still trying to identify the foreign fighters flowing into Iraq. He also says the military is also investigating whether the fighters are collaborating with Saddam loyalists.

More floating around the wires on Wolfowitz...

Wolfowitz Shifts Rationales on Iraq War
With Weapons Unfound, Talk of Threat Gives Way to Rhetoric on Hussein, Democracy

By Michael Dobbs
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, September 12, 2003; Page A23

As the Bush administration's leading hawk on Iraq, Deputy Defense Secretary Paul D. Wolfowitz has been a tireless proponent of the argument that Iraq's possession of weapons of mass destruction was a compelling enough reason for the United States to resort to war.

These days, his emphasis is different. In testimony to congressional committees and interviews with reporters, Wolfowitz prefers to stress the evil, dictatorial nature of former president Saddam Hussein's defunct government and the opportunity to turn Iraq into a beacon of hope for the rest of the Middle East. He depicts Iraq as the focus of a life-and-death struggle between the forces of democracy and the forces of intolerance.

The trouble with Wolfowitz is that he speaks the truth.

The truth is hard to hear sometimes.

Deputy Secretary Wolfowitz Interview with The Washington Post :

(Interview with Michael Dobbs, The Washington Post.)

Wolfowitz: If we are talking about shifting ground, it seems to me that those who were opposed to the policy to liberate the Iraqi people are the ones who keep shifting their argument.

Q: Uh huh, Why?

Wolfowitz: Well, think about it. They said it would be too dangerous to do because it would lead to the use of WMD. Interesting. That was a prominent argument. It would lead to massive street fighting in Iraqi cities. It would lead to humanitarian catastrophe. What else -- it would lead to massive environmental damage due to the destruction of Iraq's oil fields. It would lead to intervention by Turkey, Iran, I think. It would lead to large scale ethnic conflict in northern Iraq. Oh yeah, and it would cause the collapse of friendly Arab governments. That's a partial list. But, all of those things were highly touted and none of them happened. Now, all that they are left with is that there are some thousands of former Ba'athists and some hundreds of al Qaeda and other foreign terrorists who are killing Americans and Iraqis. I am sorry. I am going too fast probably. Should I slow down again?

Q: If you could speak up a bit that would help me.

Wolfowitz: Okay, we can back over it. Anyway, they are killing Americans and Iraqis and U.N. officials and moderate Shi'a leaders in order to destabilize Iraq and prevent the emergence of an Iraq that is of, by, and for the Iraqi people. I mean, it seems to me that they are the ones who keep forgetting all the wrong arguments and now all they are left with is that, yes, the enemy is trying to kill us and break our will. And, the only way the enemy is going to win is if they get to the will of the American people. That's what they tell themselves. They talk about Beirut and Somalia. Saddam Hussein told April Glaspie in 1990 that, "You Americans can't take casualties." We can.

Q: So, you reject the basic premise of the argument which is that -- I mean, can you address that point somehow. You have shifted grounds (Inaudible.).

Wolfowitz: We haven't shifted grounds. We have been clear from the beginning that there are three pieces here that fit together and that liberating the Iraqi people from a terrible tyranny has been one of the major arguments. And, in fact, that is the argument that used to be unanimously agreed on by Congress and the former Administration and the new Administration. But, what we also said was -- particularly in light of September 11 and the way we had to look at the potential threat of terrorism and WMD -- it was a three-part argument as laid out by Powell in his U.N. presentation. As laid out, I am quite certain, if you looked at Cheney's speeches, it's there. It's there in the President's State of the union message. But, I would say most of all, I am the one who was often criticized for talking too much about what Iraq could become once it was liberated and, indeed, what I believe it has to become -- because we have taken on a task and we have to win it. But, when we win it, it will, in fact, advance American interests in the larger battle on terrorism.

I was going to send him this but I see he/she/it already wore out its welcome...

Someone who thinks Wolfie is an "Assistant Secretary of State" - and an "Israeli" certainly doesn't know diddly about Iraq, much less its council.

Speaking as one who has loved ones in Iraq (and who has had loved ones in Iraq almost continuously since Desert Shield many years ago) I know Wolfie and Rummy are highly respected among those who know their stuff, among those who know how miserable it was to have the gutless idiot Clinton or just as bad, the goober Jimmy Carter, in charge of the country. My loved ones are in good hands and their morale has never been higher, in spite of some presstitutes' best efforts to try downplay or even whizz on the military's mazing accomplishments.

I think I'll take the word of my military relatives over that of some not very bright newbie poster named "moonbounce," or "rainbow" or "flowerpower" or whatever else the Dean/ANSWER/DNC/human shield types are using these days.

Has anybody else realized that al Qaeda no longer has a safe home base in Afghanistan and must be looking for a new host. What better place would there be than Iraq, which is in a power vacuum. As long as they can keep things stirred up, they can hide amongst the local factions. If they make enough trouble and the Democrats are successful in taking the White House, they will have an excellent chance of working out an arrangement with the local Taliban and just think . . . they will be sitting on top of a WMD quarry.

If the rats get back into the White House, the terrorists win. It is as simple as that.
