September 12, 2003 -- SAN MARCOS, Texas - Actor Larry Hovis, best known for his role as Sgt. Carter on the 1960s television series "Hogan's Heroes" has died after a bout with cancer. He was 67.

Hovis, who taught acting at Texas State University-San Marcos, died Tuesday, the school's public relations office said yesterday.

After the news of Johnny Cash & John Ritter, I also find that Larry Hovis who played Carter on "Hogan's Heroes" died. The old adage they go in threes was certainly evident today. Very unreal. Did not know that Larry Hovis was also one of the creators of "Laugh In". I remember him on the show and I guess he was doing both shows. If this has already been posted, sorry, I did not find it.

One of the depressing thing about the media age is that all of these actors/actresses/politicians/athletes whom we get very familiar with will start dying off in large numbers over the next 10 years (guys from the 60s and 70s). The guys from the 40s and 50s are almost all dead (save Mel Brooks, Sid Ceaser, and Carl Reiner). I don't mean to get into equating it with the death of a loved one, but it's sad to see people you grew up watching no longer with us.

Hovis' Hitler was hysterical, btw.

Always liked him. And in those days T.V. actors got nothing financially like the T.V. stars of today.

I just signed on to check this myself. Larry's death was mentioned in the latest "This is True" mailing (see http://www.thisistrue.com)

The info said that Larry Hovis always wore gloves on HH to hide his wedding ring since Sgt. Carter was supposed to be single. Since 1990, he taught acting at Texas State University in San Marcos. Hovis was diagnosed with cancer 3 months ago and died in hospice on Sept. 9th.

RIP "Little Deer That Runs Swift And Sure Through Forest"

I did not remember his name on the show was Carter. Am I not correct that the Sgt. on "Gomer Pyle" was also Sgt. Carter? Must have been a name shortage in the mid-60s. Anyway, a funny show and a wonderful comedic actor. Most of them gone now from HH -- who is still alive from the main cast? LeBeau? Kinchloe?

RIP, Larry. I only really know him from Hogan's Heroes, but his character "Carter" was great.

When I was in elementary school in the early 70's I used to see Leon Askin (who played General Burkhalter) walk his little dog nearly every day as I walked to the playground after lunch. My friends and I would immediately start singing the Hogan's Heroes theme song upon seeing him, and he'd smile and laugh at us.

Hogan, Shultz, and Klink are dead for sure. I don't recall seeing Kinch in much after the show. Newkirk and Lebeau were the most visible. I believe they are both living.

Could not get in the cast bios page.

The funniest thing about Hogan's Heroes, is that occasionally they would dress Kinchloe up in a German uniform when they went on their missions. Geez, don'cha think that would have been just a bit suspicious?

Basketball announcers once distinguished Julius Erving from Rick Barry by saying one was left-handed and the other was right-handed.

This really makes me sad. I remember scheduling all my college classes around Hogan's Heroes hour 1PM-2PM every weekday afternoon.

Try Google search for "Hogan's Heroes." Lost of websites, some with cast bio links. Also, individual cast members can be explored at Internet Movie Database. Let me know anything interesting you discover.

"Lost of websites" should read, "Lots of websites."
