Douglas even commented on how unmoved he was to help Sumner.

Democrats are still the same. :) Maybe we should treat them the same. :0

And the intellectual rebuttle from the Senator from South Carolina? :^)

Actually, he was a Representative, a cousin of the Senator, who was rather elderly.

Yes, I wonder how many have been to Auburn to see his house.

I'm glad to hear that he has a statue in the city. Isn't it a shame what New York now produces politically, Rudy and the Lone Ranger Pataki aside?

No, I believe it was Senator Butler's nephew-Preston Brooks. Brooks was fairly young and much younger than Sumner.

What a disgrace. They couldn't challenge the truth of what Sumner said, so they beat him for it.

Patakifeller is a big spending joke of a Republican. Rudy is good on some issues, atrocious on others, but would make a great governor in terms of managing the state.

I know you are an uneducated hayseed, but do you consider books merchandise?

If they're not, it will be a great shock to all publishers, book store owners, etc.

Every Confederate rebel was a Democrat.

Sad, but typical. Don't want to learn em too much, no? Else they get a bit too sofisti'cated.

Well, Alexander Stevens was a former Whig. However, by and large, the entire South went Democratic after the 1850 Compromise.

he let Sherman kill a bunch of teenage kids as a "Christmas present" to him.

The only "Christmas present" I'm aware of that Sherman gave Lincoln was the city of Savannah, which surrendered. What teenage kids are you talking about.

The teenage children that Hood commanded and massacred because of his Southern pride and stupidity and Davis' stubborn insistence on replacing the shrewd Johnson (sp) with the chivalric knight Hood.

By the Civil War, the South was solidly Democrat. The chief exceptions were the blacks and the Appalachian and Ozark Unionists, who voted Republican as soon as they could.

Well, they did attack Republican stronghold Texas at Waco, but it wasn't federal property I guess. And three of them did hobnob with Saddam. I guess it doesn't rise to the level of Fort Sumter yet though. :^)

Yeah, I guess he sent in a hitman. Mafia action on the Senate floor, unbelievable. :^)

Lincoln makes me hesitant to admit to my relatives I'm a Republican.(Note correct spelling)

His dirty little war was the beginning of the end of Constitutional government.

The Gettysburg Address (updated):

Now we are engaged in a great war on terror, testing whether this nation, or any nation so conceived in liberty and dedicated to the propositions of human freedom and the intrinsic dignity of an open society, can long endure. We are engaged on a great battlefield of that war in Iraq, and earlier, in Afghanistan. The brave men and women, living and dead, who struggled there, have consecrated our struggle.

The world will little note, nor long remember, what we say here on these boards, but it can never forget what our fighting men and women did there. It is for us the living, rather, to rededicated ourselves to the unfinished work which they who fought have thus far so nobly advanced, to the great task remaining before us -- that from these honored dead we may take increased devotion to the cause of human freedom and democracy for which they gave the last full measure of devotion -- that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain -- that freedom-loving Iraqis, and all our friends around the world, and most especially, our nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom -- and that governments of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

(With profound apologies to Abraham Lincoln for the appropriation of his sacred words.)

Please understand that you and the other neo-Confederates use Free Republic to express your veneration for Robert Lee and other killers of hundreds of thousands of U. S. troops, at a time when other U. S. troops are being killed in Iraq.
