It was James Shields who challenged Lincoln to the duel. Shields was not blind, going on to be a Union Army general and the only person elected to the U. S. Senate from three different states (Illinois, Minnesote, and Missouri).

I know. It is the truth. To be honest, I doubt many of those that heard both gentlemen understood what was going on. They were continually reprimanded for shooting their mouths off, but still, it must have taken great concentration.

That could be. Seems like nowadays, if you don't speak in short little sentences prepackaged by the mainstream media and institutions of learning, you're labeled an eccentric. People are so discouraged from using reason anymore and ridiculed if they veer from the mainstream even slightly before anyone even considers what was said.

I would give nearly anything to have been a fly on the wall during Sumner's Crime Against Kansas.

Well Lincoln didn't exactly like Indians

He did spare the life of an Indian Chief in the Black Hawk war, despite the fact that his cohorts in the Indiana Militia wanted him executed immediately.

He wanted blacks sent back to Africa

Him and about 80% of all white people at the time. Nevertheless, he was the first President to use the ending of slavery as an issue (albeit only in states "under rebellion"). For his time, he was a "moderate" on racial issues (Thaddeaus Stevens and the great William Seward were much more progressive on this point than Abe).

After Abraham Lincoln beat William Seward for the nomination, Seward sent his close political ally of three decades, Thurlow Weed, to Springfield to check him out. Upon returning to New York, Weed looked Seward in the eye and said: "Abraham Lincoln is the best man I ever met."

In Madison Square Park here in NYC, there is a prominently displayed statue of William Seward. Its a shame that too few people know of this great man. A bigger shame are the people that New Yorker currently elect to national and statewide office...
