Peace prize opposed

10oct03 AUSTRALIAN Jews are lobbying NSW Premier Bob Carr to reconsider presenting Palestinian activist Hanan Ashrawi with a $50,000 peace prize.

The NSW Jewish Board of Deputies is seeking a meeting with Mr Carr before he presents Mrs Ashrawi with the University of Sydney's Peace Foundation prize at Parliament House next month.

Mr Carr's spokesman yesterday said he still intended to present the prize to Mrs Ashrawi.

The Australia/Israel and Jewish Affairs Council claimed Mrs Ashrawi had pushed a position inconsistent with a two-state for two-peoples Middle East solution.
