In recent debates concerning "gay marriage" and "civil unions" I believe conservatives have made three equally dangerous errors.
First, I believe some have ignored the religious foundation of marriage. Marriage between only a man and woman is not the traditional view. It is the universal and eternal view. This is so because God made it so at the beginning of creation: "For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife." Not only did God himself invent and institute marriage between a man and wife, but he also mentions fathers and mothers from the very beginning. This is the natural order. Its not that a man and man should not be married it is that they cannot be married. We can perform all kinds of ceremonies over the two of them and issue them a license and even uphold the act with a Supreme Court decision. It will not make it a marriage. It will simply make all of us more to blind to reality. Calling a dogs tail a leg does not make it so.

Such an argument is meaningless to the Godless. However, it certainly should be used as a starting point when debating so-called Christians on the subject.
I know this is the religion forum, but I am one of those 'Godless' you refer to. I don't see anything wrong with gay 'marriage', but I think they should call them 'civil unions' as a compromise.
Why do you assume that the godless cannot and will not respond to the Word of God? (and aren't we all godless by nature?) That is exactly what the law being a schoolmaster to lead us to Christ is all about. That is exactly the assumption I am attempting to refute. I don't find the Apostle Paul reducing his discussion of the Creator among pagans but rather increased such talk (Acts 17 as an example)
Ping!
Well, it'd be like an Islamic jihadist explaining why he needs to cut off an infidel's head. "The Koran commands it". However, in that case, I would be the Godless one from his point of view (or rather Allah-less), so his assertion that Allah commands it would fall on deaf ears in my case.
"Such an argument is meaningless to the Godless."
Many like to pretend that we know everything there is about cultural and social interation and don't need to learn any more. If this were true, we would live in a paradise where those educated in these 'truths' could plan everything so we lesser beings would live forever in unbridled happiness. This is ridiculous, of course. Traditions have developed over centuries and should not be lightly tossed away. If one believes in evolution, then the results of that process as applied to cultures and societal mores should always be treated with respect. It's not perfect, but it is usually more correct than our own pretensions to Godhood.
You assume that your position before the false God is the same as the Muslims position before the true God - it is not. It is the true God whose Divinity is known to all men. You can appeal to men's conscience because, while warped, it still recognizes the true God even while it rebels at his commands. This may be one of the reasons the followers of the false God turn violent - the are trying to destroy the voice that speaks against them. The true Christian finds not a whit of appeal in the discussions of such an idol as Allah.
Secular humanism has indoctrinated most, of those who call themselves Christians, to believe they must be tolerant of sexual deviates. To even refer to this union as 'same-sex marriage' and not "an abomination" is proof that one has fallen under the spell of the religion known as Secular Humanism ...which promotes tolerance of non-Christian belief.
God's Holy Word tells us that if anyone comes to us with any doctrine other than the doctrine of Jesus Christ we are not to allow that person into our house. We are not even to greet (say hello) to such an individual. If we do we share in the unbelievers sin - 2 John 9-11 KJV.
Yet the 'world of secular humanist' have convinced Christians that they must be tolerant of those things they know to be against Gods Holy Word.
