Shillong Christian Shoemaker’s Feat Enters The Guinness

Shillong, MEGHALAYA (SAR NEWS)-- James Syiemiong is on cloud nine. On September 11, this Shillong-based professional shoemaker walked into the Guinness Book of World Records for making the highest heeled shoe that is also commercially available.
“As of February 2004, the highest heels commercially available boast a combination of 17 inches (43 cm) platform and 20 inches (51 cm) produced by James Syiemiong (India) for boldnbootiful.com,” said the certificate from the London-based Guinness World Records Limited, which reached Syiemiong, September 9.
Syiemiong, a “practising Christian”, told SAR News, September 12: “I really feel great that my hard work has finally paid off – with two records in a year. No Tom, Dick and Harry can make to the record books…I am proud to have made it twice! It’s the ultimate blaze of glory for me."
In February, Symieong’s created another Guinness record for joint cracks, or knuckling 26 different bone joints of his body in just 56.1 seconds. His name also plodded into the ‘Limca Book of World Records’ last year for making the world’s largest pair of shoes.
“I make and break records and also make shoes for the handicapped,” Syiemiong told SAR News. My shoes cure ‘stinking feet’ and rheumatism.” James’ shop ‘Theodore’ (meaning Gift of God in Greek), at Bara Bazaar in Shillong too is dazzling in his Guinness glory. Michael (did not give his surname), from Shillong, who now works in Bangalore, told SAR News September 12, that all roads in the Northeast lead to ‘Theodore’. “Anybody with a passion for fashion heads to James’s shop.” Symieong says the “record” shoes he made were not just for records’ sake “but they are available commercially”. “These would not be uncomfortable for even non-professional models to walk with.
Two records and is that the end of James’s ambition? “For me the goal is to be somebody in life. I want to concentrate on my profession. I want to go to Italy to acquire shoemaking skills at the Milan-based ARS Arpel International Institute of Footwear,” Syiemiong told SAR News.
He has applied for sponsorship to the Indian Union Ministry of Development of North-Eastern Region and is hoping that Christian Member of Parliament from Shillong, P.R. Kyndiah, would give him the required help. He also plans to open a footwear institute to generate employment. But James has a grouse: “Nobody has given me any recognition except the Guinness World Records!”
