RB Miller

I find John Paul II's life inspirational and sensed great holiness when I was near him on his trip through Baltimore.

I have read "The Gospel of Life" and I thought it would be a contribution to start a reading list from other Catholics here on FR. I am impressed with the Catholic Freepers and look forward to all of your comments.

If you are interested please submit your TOP 5 List of JPIIs writings. Please list your top 5 with reasons why they are on your list.

I don't know if I can come up with five, but ...

"Love and Responsibility"
"Theology of the Body"
"Splendor of Truth"
"Faith and Reason"
"Salvation through Suffering" (or something kind of like that ... "Salvifici Doloris" (more or less.)

I confess I haven't read many of the Pope's works. Wish I could get more reading of that nature done. That said, I do have a list of three I found very excellent.
I would most highly recommend "Sign of Contradiction" which is a series of meditations on the Rosary and Way of the Cross given for Pope Paul VI and Vatican staff on the occasion of Lent 1976.
Next, to understand more philosophically and theologically what Johannes Paulus Magnus was all about, I recommend his first Encyclical, "Redemptor Hominis".
And, confessing to only having read some of the kernels of the work, "Veritatis Splendor" is a favorite since it is a bulwark in defense of objective Truth.

Mother of the Redeemer

His encyclical letter on the Eucharist (2003)

Rich in Mercy

Crossing the threshold of Hope

The Rosary--> his addition of the Luminous mysteries

what can I say? I tried to devour what the man wrote.

JP2's writing takes effort. I sometimes feel like it was composed in Polish, written in Latin, translated into French, and then into English ... so no wonder I don't get it!
