The next pope will almost certainly be conservative like Pope John Paul II, but will have to be less authoritarian if he is to avoid a schism in the Roman Catholic Church, a group of Boston College experts said yesterday.
What Im hoping for is a weaker pope, Sister Mary An Hinsdale, an expert on ecclesiology and womens issues in the church, said during a panel discussion on next weeks historic papal election.
Hinsdale cited the centralization of power that marked John Paul IIs 26-year papacy and that threatened to roll back some of Vatican IIs reforms.
Many African bishops, for example, supported the use of condoms to help end the AIDS pandemic, she said, but felt hamstrung.
We live in a both a very divided world And a very divided church, said the Rev. David Hollenbach, a theologian and expert on Christian ethics, social justice and human rights. . . . Its not going to be easy to find someone who can address those divisions.
Good for a laugh anyway . . .
Why do people always treat a schism like a bad thing? Was it bad for Judas to flee the Last Supper? Should Christ have accomodated His desires?
The schism already exists. If they want to make it "official", let them, and good riddance!
Good point :-)
Not everyone always. The thing is these people want to avoid a schism by making us all go over to their side. I'm sure someone on that panel made it clear that we're the divisive ones!
Either that or the second helps with the first -- along with a smorgasbord of other delights!
Exactly my thinking. Let's not stand in the way of a healthy self-purge.
It's best not to count on most liberals though, to stand on principle. They want the infrastructure, the historical pedigree and imprimatur attached to Rome, which I'm not sure it would be wise of the Traditionalists to give up without a good, solid, very protracted, front and center, visable to all, fight.
They want the infrastructure, the historical pedigree
The same principle applies to CINOs in general. Being Catholic to many is a sort of nice, cultural status to have, which in essence, has nothing to do with faith.
One good trend I see is that the kids of CINOs are increasigly not even calling themselves Catholic. So, at least the younger generation of CINOs sees the hypocrisy and seeks out their own religion rather than trying to pervert the Church.
What I'm hoping for is a pope who will enforce the mandatum.
I won't miss you sister.
As Howie Carr would say, "How can we miss you, if you won't go away?"
LOL! Right - just needed a minor editorial adjustment!
LOL! He's now available on streaming audio on wrko.com, so the rest of the country can enjoy him. He's New England's best kept secret. I'd love to see him skewer liberals on a national level, but I'd hate to give him up. "Mr. Speakah!"
It is my impression that the self-styled "traditionalists" have already gone.
Well, they have definitely succeeded at creating a much weaker and much more intellectually feeble Catholic academia. They would definitely know a thing or two about how to "weaken" institutions of the church.
Well, all right, she didn't really say that ...
