I found this gem of a litany in an old pocket-sized book an old priest of Irish descent gave to me earlier this evening. It really is neat.

Bump

Very appropriate invocation of these great saints when prayed with intention against snakes, serpents, alligators and pests on behalf of those in Louisiana, Miss. and Alabama.

Also, of the Celtic saints in Britain -- St. Hilda banished the snakes from Whitby.

St. Hilda of Whitby, pray for them in their troubles.

If memory serves, the Irish arrived in Louisiana not long after the French did!

This is probably what I'm thinking of:

In the 1650s, after Oliver Cromwell had conquered Ireland in a series of massacres, he left his brother, Henry, as the island's governor. In the next decade, Henry sold thousands of Irish people, mostly women and children, as slaves to the West Indies. Estimates range between 3,00 and 80,000.

I'll look further into this question.

But many many Irish made their way to Louisiana to escape the British and they joined in during the War of 1812 during the great invocation of Our Lady of Prompt Succour to defeat the British Protestants and save Catholic Louisiana from those who would surely persecute the Catholics.

I found this time: Louisiana’s French History

1699
First permanent French settlement in Louisiana is established in Biloxi.
1762
France cedes Louisiana to Spain
1773
First Spanish colonists begin to settle Louisiana, as well as Irish Catholic refugees.

I might have read you were part Irish at some point, but I didn't remember it at the time I posted it. I know there is a difference of opinion on Ireland's Christian roots between Catholics and Orthodox, but I'm glad you prayed this. Continue to pray for the poor people of the south-central Gulf Coast.

Well, St. Patrick wasn't a native of Ireland. Most of them probably at least have a brief entry on this website: Patron Saints Index

Only one man missing from the list - St. Oliver Plunkett, but seeing that the above list was written in 1916, and Plunkett wasn't canonised until 1975....
