ORLANDO, Fla., July 30 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The Board of Directors of the Knights of Columbus today voted to make an immediate $100,000 donation for humanitarian aid to those affected by the current conflict in Lebanon. The Board is meeting this weekend in Orlando, Florida, where the 124th annual Knights of Columbus convention begins on Tuesday, August 1, 2006.

The $100,000 donation will go to Caritas Lebanon, the Lebanese affiliate of one of the world's largest humanitarian relief organizations. The Caritas International Confederation is composed of 162 Catholic organizations operating in 200 countries.

"The conflict which began in Lebanon two weeks ago has taken a toll among Lebanese citizens from every walk of life," Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson said. "In addition to making this emergency donation to help relieve the suffering of those caught in the middle of the fighting, we pray for an end to the conflict, and for reconciliation that brings a just and lasting peace."

The Knights of Columbus is the world's largest lay Catholic organization, with more than 1.7 million members in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Central America, the Philippines and Poland. Last year, Knights donated more than $139 million and 64 million hours of volunteer time to charity.

How about a 100,000 to the kids targeted in Israel by Hizbullah? I'm Catholic, I go to church and contribute regularly. I have nothing against helping the innocent victims in Lebanon but I would like to see the same for the innocent victims in Israel.

I appreciate your sentiment, but my Lebanese-Irish aunt is concerned for the safety of the remaining Cathoics in Lebanon.

Well, that's NEVER going to happen. Not as long as there's a Muslim left on this Earth.

Archbishop Elias Chacour of Galilee (Northern Israel) is asking for money to help Catholics and others that have been affected up in Galilee. The charity Aid to the Church in Need is collecting money for him. I'm sure the Knights would be happy to help them out.

Any money to Lebanon helps Hezbollah since they are part of the Lebanese government, voted into office by the Lebanese people. If Christians are in southern Lebanon, why are they not evacuating? It makes no sence to stay in the disputed area where Hezbollah terrorists are firing rockets and than ask for help when caught in the crossfire.

"In addition to making this emergency donation to help relieve the suffering of those caught in the middle of the fighting, we pray for an end to the conflict, and for reconciliation that brings a just and lasting peace."

Catholic areas are not being targeted in Lebanon...Only terrorist areas...And it sounds as tho they are already promised millions upon millions of dollars from their terrorist ally countries...

Why would the Catholic church want to support the terrorists...And quite telling is there is no talk of support, financial or otherwise to the half a million Jew displaced by the terrorist rocketeers...

Mat 25:41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
Mat 25:42 For I was hungry, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink:
Mat 25:43 I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.
Mat 25:44 Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee hungry, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?
Mat 25:45 Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.
Mat 25:46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

Is this the Knights of Columbus???

OK , I going to have to have my rant on this subject and iscool this is not totally directed to you. But your post is just part of a hundred as well as other conversations that have sent me over the edge.

Everyone seems to become an expert on Lebanon the last few weeks, but I have to admit there were not many post on Lebanon this past year or much in the media. The complexity of the situation is often over looked.

(1) There are tons of Charities that are supporting the State of Israel and the Jews. I am seeing one that is continuing being broadcast on FOX news channel.

(2) There are many Christians there that need help. I know that Israel is not trying to blow innocent people up but as they say Sh** happens. This is war torn Lebanon. THis isnt the US where you just get on the Interstate and evac like you do from a hurricane. THere is poverty and other things to consider.

(3)Lebanon is home to the most ancient roots of Christianity. THe Catholic Church has an obligation to help there. Plus they are our fellow Catholics.

(4) It is ok to speak out for Lebanon sometimes and it not be regarded as anti Israel. I have heard the damnest statements the last two weeks about how Lebanon has done nothing to get rid of these terrorist. However, I can't help but notice over the past few years how there have been no stories hardly hitting the msm about Christians , druze, and moslems that have been killed or asssainated trying to bring freedom there. We are having a devil of time in Iraq. A cause I support. That should be kept in mind when demanding that the tiny Lebanese army disarm Hezbullah. If they tried to that they would be defeated and all Lebanon would be under control of Iran and Syria

(5) Unrelated but pertinent. It is ok to question certain aspects of what Israel is doing and what the end game is here. It is ok to question why they are hitting certain targets that will do nothing but hamper the tourist industry there. Hezzbullah does not work in the hotels or seeling cape cods to tourist on the Beach. The people that are do work in those industries are currently in hiding in Syria of all places.

(6) As to the question of Government. Perhaps the people that are constantly criticizing all aspects of the Lebanonese Govt should look at reality. Perhaps just Perhaps the goal here of Hezbullah is get rid of the elements we want there and to take control of the entire Government. IF those elements are not standing at the end of the day then this has been a defeat for Israel.

That being said, I am going to donate to this. It is not in our interest to have all the Christians leave Lebanon nor the same Muslims either. We have to start thinking about the rebuilding and the future. As well as immediate concerns of hunger and disease.

So yes this is the Knights of Columbus. I am amazed that other Christians don't seem to give a big hoot about fellow Christians from an area that Chrisitianity came from and still lives and breathes. I know in war there is collaterial damage. But as Christians we are called to minister to that collateral damage also in material as well as spirtual needs

Lebanese have voted Hezbollah into thirty percent of their government as leaders. They are complicit in everything IMO.

It's more complicated than that. Lebanon is 33% Christian and 66% muslim. 66% muslim beats 33% Christian in elections, especially when muslim Syria is counting the votes.

All of us hope Israel completely destroys Hezboallah, and runs the Syrian secret police out of Lebanon. Money from the gulf states for "Lebanon relief" will only go to muslims. The Knights are wanting to help our brothers in Christ. They have been suffering at the hands of muslims for centuries, not just for the last couple weeks.

ANd what about the other 70 percent? Lebanon is in all reality two countries. It is ok I guess to heep believing this legal fiction that the 70 percent of Lebanon that does not support Hezbullah is complicit in all this. The truth is the goal of Israel in this I beleive long term is to get the Lebaonese troops on that border and not Hezbullah.

However,I think its appropriate to ask at points in this conflict if what Israel is doing is acheiving that goal. Perhaps it is. But I am sensing from what I am reading that is not happening at this point.

THe question many Lebanonese are asking is this. Why are they the object of all the bombing. Many are asking when is Syria that is responsible for much of this going to have their pound of flesh taken out.

Again at the end of the day if those parts of the Lebanese Government are not left standing that support freedom this will be a total defeat for Israel. Hezbullah loses the battle but takes complete control of the Government and Lebanon. Israel I believe recognizes that also.

How do you register that?

How many Christians in Lebanon do you think voted for the Hezbos?

Look, the problem is that Iran and Syria have armed their own militia in Lebanon and Lebanon's nascent government never had a chance. They also, one way or another, wound up with a very bad president.

The US model is to move into a place, kill it's leadership, and replace it one with that behaves. That is the model the US should follow and like the Germans, Japanese, Panamanians, Afghanis, and Iraqis.....

Seems all over where we have these Jihad folks they are surrounded by all these MUTE folks who claim that isn't us. Yet, that is where the terrorists are.

IMO you wipe Hezbollah out and like all other wars you have to accept there will be civilian casualties.

If you have to worry about civilian loss of life in a war, you can't win the war.

Terrorist don't care and have their launchers under schools, homes and every woman and child they can find.

You win enough wars and eventually terrorist won't find any welcome mats anywhere in the world.

See #15.

We would have lost WW1 & WW2 if we fought with such great concerns for civilians fighting a war.

I would not expect Israel or us to fight with such impossible standards. All that would do is enable terrorist to grow like the cancer they are.

Actually, the US did not execute every German soldier or every Japanese soldier.

however, I do think that all the hezbos need to be executed.

My disagreement with you is that the Catholics living in the northern part of Lebanon who voted against the govermnent and are doing whatever they can to just survive are not complicit and worthy of humanitarian assistance.

My point back to you (as a fellow Catholic) is they better either decide to fight or run, because this is a war and eventually they can get hurt.
Be a good time for Christians to vacation out of Lebanon.

The government of Lebanon is complicit whether it was all Muslims voting them in or not. They have to be held accountable as well.

So I guess you are accountable for whatever Clinton did as president. Rape, fraud, possibly murder, you take responsibility for it all?

Ooh...nice comeback.

Seriously.

Nice comeback. Those who claim that the Knights are wrong in helping the Lebanese people -- who "voted Hezbollah into office" forget that they themselves live in a nation where the wrong guys sometimes win the elections.

Should we consider all Americans guilty of electing Democrats?

Should we throw away the state of California simply because they have a really bad habit of electing communists?
