A Deist Among The Mormons
Upper Valley Free Press ^ | 01-28-2008 | Daryl L. Hunter

Posted on 01/28/2008 3:00:26 PM PST by Daryl L.Hunter

I live in a beautiful rural valley of 700 people in eastern Idaho and after I came to live here I found out that Utah isn’t the only place that is fifty percent Mormon.

As a compulsively inquisitive geo-political junkie I decided to look through the Book of Mormon so I could learn a little about the belief of my neighbors. As with any outsider looking into another’s faith, I found many outlandish passages that would require faith to swallow, however, this is a characteristic that all religions share. What I have learned of my Mormon neighbors in the years since my voyeuristic venture into the sacred book of the LDS Church is more telling. My anecdotal experiences have revealed to me that I couldn’t have better neighbors or live in a finer community.

Although I can’t achieve faith, I admire, and may be envious of those who do. One of the problems I find in my on going analysis of life and faith is the paradoxical dichotomy of religion that fosters the Achilles Heel of human nature, “tribalism.” The tribalism of religion pits one religion against another, hence 99% of the worlds problems. The tribalism of Evangelicals is undermining the ability of their conservative brethren, the Mormons, to carry forward the flag of conservatism and I find this as an affront to common sense.

“...I found many outlandish passages that would require faith to swallow, however, this is a characteristic that all religions share.” A little bias there ... but frankly I’d happily trade in my liberal, affluent, white trash neighbors for a Mormon family any say of the week. I’d also try to convert them to Christianity too ... .

Nice but you have a technical inaccuracy. They do drink soda. Some of them drink a lot. Visit the caf at BYU and you will find many fountains.

The distinction is they can't drink soda with caffeine (one reason I cannot be an LDSer). So you see a lot of 'gold' sodas (caffiene free) and sprite.

It’s not “tribalism”.

It’s called bigotry.

And another inaccuracy - Harry Reid is not a Jack (apostate) Mormon. He is very active in the DC church and, unfortunately, often dialed up the prophet anytime he though the leadership in the Church was getting to conservative.

When I was in high school, I worked summers on the staff of a Boy Scout Camp (Camp Mitigwa in Iowa) and one of my cabin-mates was a Mormon.

He was a very sincere and straight forward guy and he didn't try to push us toward his beliefs.

Of course he's an Eagle Scout, but I think he had a good head on his shoulders long before earning that rank.

Couldn't ask for better neighbors.

I think the writer of that piece is actually a Mormon, or at least a close blood relative of Joseph Smith.

That's the old argument that "disputations among the religions" causes all problems.

Some folks simply have no taste for free thought when it comes to religion even if they, themselves, benefit from that freedom.

No, "disputations among the religions" do not cause all the problems ~ people do, and it doesn't matter if they're religious or not. Even Joe Stalin could cause problems all by himself.

It's failure to comprehend that we are all answerable in the end that is the root of the problems.

“It is my hope that the Evangelicals will very soon realize that to further their conservative objectives, that their best hope is to support Mitt Romney for President. Governor Huckabee, who Evangelicals favor, showed some early promise, but his track record that has subsequently come to light, has proven he doesn’t share many goals of America’s conservatives. His sole support is the Evangelical base; many conservatives aren’t Evangelicals and will not support him. Huckabee’s support draws votes away from Mitt Romney. Mayor Rudi Giuliani is soon to drop out of the race, and his liberal supporters will fall in behind, liberal, New York Times favorite, John McCain. A McCain Presidency will be a domestic cultural disaster and a giant step backward for the conservative movement.

He about right on this.

I find Mike Huckabee to be an abomination as he twists Scripture to fit his HUMANISTIC agenda financed by socialism. That isn’t Christianity. I find Mitt’s polices to align more closely to Biblical Christianity.

It’s a pity that these “Evangelicals” don’t know what Christianity is and easily charmed with HUMANISM. That is the REAL tragedy. Bigotry fuels their support for the Huckster - understanding Mormonism and where it differs from Christianity and comparing it to HUckabees statement that Mormons believe that Satan is Jesus's brother is absurd and right off a chick publication. It was shameful - trying to further exploit peoples ignorance for self gain. Mike knows better than that - what Mormons believe. Mike as I said is a self serving abomination.

Who would you want for neighbors?

OR

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

No it's not. This has to do with Mitt Romney having caved into the mind-numbed, robot-like, knee-jerk Liberals in the People's Republic of Taxachusetts one too many times.

When pointing out someone’s “inaccuracies” and attempting to correct it, you probably should know what you’re talking about.

Soda with caffeine is not banned. That has been left up to individual members to decide.

But besides that’s a very small technical detail about the article which is pretty good.

“The tribalism of Evangelicals is undermining the ability of their conservative brethren, the Mormons, to carry forward the flag of conservatism and I find this as an affront to common sense.”

Only because you don’t hold beliefs. It is NOT tribalism, it is truth verses error. This world is not my home, I’m just passing through. Decisions made in this life affect the next....Heaven or hell. Mormonism spreads a false path to Heaven which actually leads to Hell. It is really that simple. Therefore, I cannot nor will not support a mormon for POTUS because in that role he can have a very bad influence on people. There are many that will embrace Romney’s false Christianity as the real thing, and experience hell as the result. I don’t want the White House to become a Donny and Marie call to mormonism. It is chocolate covered poison. It looks and tastes good, but it will kill you if you swallow.

Would I physically attack or harm a mormon? No, of course not, they are lost souls just like everyone else not properly knowing God through Christ Jesus. They need to be saved also. However, I will not do anything to further their misguided goals and thus share responsibility for persons winding up in hell without hearing the true Gospel first.

I can’t make anyone believe, that is God’s job. My job is to make sure they hear the real deal, not some subsitute, so they can make an informed decision. Should they chose not to believe, then their blood rests on their own hands and not mine.

Also, in regards to evangelical Christianity verses mormonisn......both could be wrong, but both cannot be right. It is basic logic.

... very interesting article. I did not know about the Mormons tremendous support for the Boy Scouts. I did know that they are usually fine people, with strong family values. It doesn’t sound like the local school described in the article is teaching that America is an oppressor nation.

The tribalism of religion pits one religion against another, hence 99% of the worlds problems.

Not even close to 99% of the world's problems. The true nature of the world's problems -- which some religious beliefs out there use as tools of their conformities -- is the desire to subjugate other men rather than cooperating with other men. Therefore, the entire struggle in human nature is not necessarily religious tribalism or, even as Marx claimed the struggle was about (class struggles); it is a problem with those who want to force their tribal beliefs (religious or not) on those who prefer to have their liberty instead. Historically, the tribes have won and only the lucky desirers of liberty manage to escape...only to watch their offspring repeat the vicious cycle.

Perhaps you should educate yourself on Mitt, then you wouldn’t talk so foolishly. A over loaded mouth full of barbs tells me more about YOU.

We’re happy to vote for Mitt and we’ll be doing volunteer work for him. I’d rather have him and his family next door to us than yours ... any day of the week!

“It’s called bigotry.”

Not if it is the truth.

For many, Evangelicals, to enforce bigotry is their truth.
For some odd reason, praying for THEM to convert to Christianity isn’t a possibility. In plain language, I call them hypocrites.

Sorry, in this particular universe both can be right. We are not locked into some sort of clockwork mechanism. It's got a lot of loose ends, indeterminancies, and quantum mechanics can work to influence macro-scale events and entities.
