Prayer Request for my Step-Dad (Vanity)
Posted on 04/24/2008 6:07:12 AM PDT by melissa_in_ga
My Step-Dad went through a nasty bout of oral cancer that was diagnosed in October 2006. He went through a clinical trial at Emory University involving surgery, heavy chemo and 52 doses of radiation. In October, 2007, after many PET scans, endoscopies, x-rays, blood work, etc., they found nothing. He had a visit with his oncologist 3 weeks ago to repeat all the above tests and nothing was found.
Two days ago, doing a routine oral self-check he discovered a hard lesion on the back of his throat. This has been devastating to our family, because Emory has informed him that once that chemo/radiation therapy was completed it couldn't be repeated.
He has an appointment with his oncologist 9:30 a.m. EST today. Studies have shown that oral cancer, if it recurs, it recurs with a vengeance, and almost nothing can be done. Please, offer up your prayers that this lesion is an anomoly, or an artifact of radiation, or maybe even a normal, everyday occurence of strep throat.

I have been uplifted many times seeing threads from Prayer Warriors. I believe mightily in the power of prayers to God, even though the answers might not be what we, as unworthy humans may want. Today I ask humbly that you offer those same prayers to Bill. Thank you, and God Bless.

You may want to look outside of Emory. Others may be willing to do chemo and radiation again and other treatments. Mayo Clinic and NCI (http://nih.gov) may have other options.

I am so sorry, my friend, and share your worry. My Dad had throat cancer and was cured of it, through both chemo and radiation, had the best treatments available at the time, but it eventually came back, and I did eventually lose him. You and your step-dad will be in my thoughts and I am wishing him a return to health. Hang in there, since treatments have improved immeasurably since the 1990s...
